So.... It kinda snuck out today under the radar, but U2 have a new album out ..... On ITunes today ...... For free !

I have gone to iTunes Store and indeed it is there and shows on the description as being automatically purchased for you and available in your library....... Except it's not there on either of my two devices?

Anyone been able to download it tonight ? .?

Yep, i struggled at first then mrs zap came to the rescue, listening now. Pretty good. On the iphone, go itunes, then more, then purchased, then music, it should be listed, then download all.

Looked on iTunes, it's not listed in purchased music as far as I can see.
Weird, I can find it in iTunes on my pad, but not on my phone. Not sure why.

Where is it then?

In the store it says it is purchased but not showing in the music app.

Anyone still struggling, you go into iTunes > More > Purchased > Music > Recent Purchases and it should be listed there with the cloud/arrow icon ready to download.
And Dez, we get it, you're not a fan; I'm not a great fan of their later albums, but hey, it's free, some of it might be ok, so I'm not going to be a whiney bitch and snivel about it like many are doing in the twitterverse.
Anyone would think Apple and U2 are forcing people to download stuff against their will; you don't want it, don't download it, and don't ****ing whine about it! 🙄

Too expensive

+1

I'll download it but only if they promise this is the last one... and give me a tenner... and I don't actually have to listen to it...

+2. Giving me a fiver would still be too expensive for anything by U2.

The thing that's really annoyed me about this is the lack of an opt out.

I don't want any U2 LP, never mind the latest one, and I don't understand why Apple feel they're benefiting from association with the preaching, hypocritical, tax evading (allegedly) twunt that is Bonio.

Oh, for the love of Christ! You. Don't. Have. To. Download. It! Is that clear enough? It's not sitting in your Library, lurking for a random play opportunity, it's sitting in the Purchases section waiting to be downloaded. If you never download it, you'll never have to listen to it.
Is that clear enough for the hard of understanding?

The bad news is that the name suggests that there is another album to come - Songs of Experience?

U2 - like the Rollin Stones - started well, then the law of diminishing returns kicks in to a massive degree. And they'll probably keep churning utterly unlistenable crap out until they're on their 90's. Oasis were another candidate. But at least they had the decency to split up not too long after it became painful to listen too. Coldplay are going to keep going forever too, aren't they? And they didn't even start well!

IMHO with the growing trend of music streaming sites becoming available artists are having to resort to more "imaginative " means of getting new material across to the public in general, fans will always buy new material, look at all the expanded reissues available. A few years ago Radiohead released In Rainbows on a "pay what you think it's worth basis",funnily enough their only album not on Spotify, it's a gamble that will eventually buy it,or an over inflated ticket to see the show giving them opportunity to play new music to their fans.

As for U2 themselves, they're a marmite band, even in Ireland - not everyone likes them - get over it and move on, we can't all be there same otherwise it'll be a pretty boring life. 😕

It's music, it's free. Give it a go and enjoy it or not.

At the end of the day, if they were a pub band playing like this we'd all be wetting ourselves over how good they are but cool people want to hate them for who they are now.

(I am not a particular fan of them but credit to them for giving out something for free).

Now the charts are based on downloads, if they give it away free does it still count on the download chart?

sounds ok so far. if they're giving it away, who am I to argue?

I first saw them on the OGWT in the late 70s & thought they were pretty good. some of the recent stuff has passed me by but overall, I'd rather listen to U2 than [s]a million[/s] X-Factor [s]wannabes[/s]

I bet they get taxed for it though, oh wait that's right they don't pay tax that'll help in giving stuff away for free.

Can't believe this is really worth a thread... Band makes music and distributes for free. It's not new, it's not important and it's really quite boring.

Thanks for your contribution.

Welcome.

If this was In Rainbows or You Cross My Path I could understand it. These were both innovative at the time for known acts. U2 to be fair are well behind the curve and doing it at a point where it's not remarkable...

^^Me?

As I said originally I think the musics ok - it's the complaints about how it's been distributed I don't get... It's not like the reeducation scene in A Clockwork Orange. People are not bring forced to like it and music for free has been done so it's no longer a novelty.

I'm not ashamed

🙂

jamj1974, DezB has now reached the stage where he has actually acknowledged his music snobishness.
This is a very important step toward his eventual recovery.

I'm currently sponsoring him through our twelve step program - eventually, we hope he'll be able to go to weddings again without insisting that the DJ plays obscure hard bop, Einstürzende Neubauten live bootlegs or the entire second side of Trout Mask Replica.

Just five pounds will buy people like Dez a copy of Abba Gold and a tube of superglue to attach the headphones.
It might not be much to you, but to people like Dez it could make a real difference to his ability to enjoy music again.

The real forgotten victims of musical snobbery are of course the families:

Mrs Dez has never been allowed to watch Mamma Mia!
His children have been emotionally damaged by continuous exposure to the collected works of Cornelius Cardew.

However, with your help, we can beat this terrible disease.

Thanks for listening.

Flip Fantasia indeed!

Music is subjective - no good or bad, just stuff you like and stuff you don't.

Getting all judgypants about it is sadder than my mum's funeral.
But much, much funnier.

Dez knows (I hope!) I'm winding him up.
I've heard loads of great new stuff because of his and other peoples recommendations on here.

I'm a recovering music snob myself - after years of therapy I can now listen to Metallica without breaking down in tears of rage.
Oasis might be step too far though Drac.

It's just noise Dez.

Noise you like, noise you don't.
Someone, somewhere will like it and their opinion is equally as valid as anyone elses.

Mate of our eldest is married to the most judgemental music snob in the world.
Ruined their wedding because he wouldn't let his wife choose any tunes for the reception.
That was a fun night.

We've recently picked the six tunes for our wedding ceremony btw.
If you're very good I'll tell you what they are.
Should brighten up your Friday.

So what and why not? It's not junk mail, a bit of paper stuffed through your door with the intent you then spend money on some charity or product you don't want, it's a new album with an actual real-world value of somewhere around £10-12, that's completely free of charge. Whether or not you wish to take advantage is entirely up to you, it all depends whether you have auto-download enabled or not. I do, but I still had to make an informed decision to go into my downloads section and click on each track to download them onto my phone.
I could, however, ignore them and they'd sit there 'till satan hosts the Winter Olympics, or the heat-death of the universe, whichever comes first.
If the album had downloaded, I'd just delete if I didn't want it. What I wouldn't do, is feign all sorts of moral outrage and start kicking and screaming on Internet fora like a snotty five year-old denied a packet of sweets.
Perhaps those individuals should ask someone suffering from MS, Parkinson's, or some form of cancer if their life had been irreparably damaged by this gross intrusion into their otherwise perfectly ordered lives.

I am highly allergic to U2 and had I unwittingly installed iTunes I would probably be dead by now. It is so bad that any music created utilising the same production staff as U2 or any studio that they have ever ventured into leads to extreme boredom. My doctor claims it is all psychosomatic and has prescribed cognitive therapy for music snobbishness 🙁

Ok, so thanks to this I found it in my iTunes library, but had no idea it was there.

So...are there any other albums that are free and I'm missing?

And...how would I have known if I hadn't read this thread? I still don't know how to find it in iTunes without going to my library-artist. This is on MacBook, so maybe I don't have the same views as the above?
