I know these threads keep popping up but STW always seems to come up with some good deals. I'm looking for a new PC laptop, I've got a desktop for working at home so really focusing on something good for using out and about. Maybe a bit smaller/lighter than usual, good battery, etc. I'd still like reasonable graphics performance for work tasks (photoshop and CAD stuff) but no need for top end.

Seen these from a quick search. What do you think?

The Acer has a better battery life and separate graphics, but no CD. I've always thought of Lenovos as having a reasonable build quality but all makes seem to get good and bad reviews.

Do you really want a smaller screen? Is this for portability, presumably?

What sort of budget are you looking at?

I don't know why, but you don't seem to get as much for your money with a 13.3" screen...

John Lewis have got this at the moment: http://www.johnlewis.com/231395890/Product.aspx
which is a good price, but it doesn't come with an HDMI output and only has 2 USB ports. Not sure how bothered about that you would be.

I have been looking at laptops recently. See my thread here:

saveonlaptops is a pretty good site.

Depending on your budget, this looks like a good buy in terms of spec for the money.

I was going to go for this, but have now decided on a 17.3" higher res screen after comments made on the thread I link to above & thinking a bit about what I'll be using it for. I'll be compromising a bit on performance, for the screen, but think that it's worth it. But, I am not going to be taking the laptop out & about.....

That ASUS deal that scholarsgate has just posted looks good; excellent spec for the money.

EDIT - although it was severely overpriced at £900. Still cheap for the spec though....

I have a desktop for working at home so it will be used as a portable PC. Onsite meetings, taking on the train/bike/plane hand luggage, etc. I appreciate I won't quite as good spec but I think I'm willing to sacrifice that as it will be way better than my current machine which is mostly OK. I'd like change from £500

Had a quick look at saveonlaptops. This looks nice if I stretch the budget and live with the colour

My daughter has a 3830 and it is is a lovely machine. Much more portable than a 15.6, very good build quality and battery life. I couldn't find a better deal. If you need a CD drive a USB one is only a few quid, but my current laptop doesn't have one and I've never missed it.

I have a Dell Precision 6600.
Weighs a ton (& cost a bomb according to work). 😕

cheers owg, i'm leaning towards the lenovo but the acer has some nice features, especially the battery life so it's good to hear it's ok.

Dell precision is about 2.5k and that ain't fully loaded

However ict sales do dell precision i7 m4600 not as expandable still kicks the arse of lots of shop pcs for around 700 notes or less sometimes they get the m6600 in for 1 k or so

It's what I would be buying for cad etc
