We watched the latest Monsters: Ed Gein thing.  Started off curious but then it just got grotesque with the level of violence against women for the sake of it tbh.  The previous drama was more fact and had me researching it more, thinking about what actually went on but this ed gein one was ****ed.

There's a new Robin Hood!

Amazon Prime, a series. The first episode is free, after that I think it's trying to get you to sign up to an MGM+ subscription. Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham. It's got a reasonable amount of sex and violence in it too, definitely not the PG rating of most of the films!

Promising start.

I'm watching it right now. It's good.

Lordy, the good ol Beeb and Attenborough have done it again. How they still manage to astound and amaze with footage of aminals in the wild after all this time is.. well amazing. "Kingdom" on Sunday was just terrific. All my fave beasts battling it out in one programme and really stunning photography. And ol Dave is 99 !!

(Maybe I should write that in a letter to the RadioTimes and win a Countryfile calendar or something! 🤣 )

Watched a couple of decent films over the weekend: the Ballad of Wallis Island (rented from Prime), which was actually really good. Felt a bit Alan Partridge at the start, but grew into something pretty heart-warming. And I Like Me, the John Candy documentary, also very good

Not new, but watched The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent on 4oD at the weekend.

Recommended as a fun romp with Nic Cage and Pedro Pascal both excellent.

We're two episodes in to Amsterdam Empire on Netflix and it's worth it for Famke Janssen alone. Lots of other good 'famous' Dutch actors as well.

It’s telling the story, he was an extremely violent individual.

I'm sorting of enjoying Pluribus.

Body snatchers in a New Mexico package?

I do like Vince Gilligan's commitment to scenes with little dialogue. That was the same with Better Call Saul.

However there's also something a bit lumpy about it - that doesn't entirely work - will reserve judgment until I've seen more episodes.

Watched Stephen King's Long Walk at weekend. This is an old story. 1967. Running Man was far better. But this does make some good observations about the states.

It was okay but ultimately it was a largely dull with punctuations of comic violence/gross out scenes.

Thought the dialogue was cumbersome.

Mayor of Kingstown S4 EP3 - things are going really over the edge with that ending. You can't beat a bit of Cartel involvement in a series.

Landman S2 Sunday! It's gonna be a Taylor Sheridan Tulsa King / Landman double bill!

A other good Tulsa King last Sunday. Story expanded nicely with a good payoff. Some good bits of humour from Stallone.

In classic "made for Americans by Americans", every single time I see that title I have to double take. No, they don't mean actual Derry, no it's nothing to do with Derry Girls, etc.

Shame, I first read the Long Walk in my teens and it's stuck with me - I thought it could, in the right hands, be a great film. And The Mist showed what doing it right would look like. I'll still watch it when it comes to streaming, I suspect.

Reviews of the new Running Man are out and middling

I was referring to the Running man book as being better in my opinion. Certainly not the god awful  Glaser film!

I'm not with the consensus on the Long Walk. My expectations were high. The cinematography or perhaps the grade was unusually drab too. Also I know King is big on profanity but this was swearing broken up with bits of dialogue.

Mark Hamill popping up was a suprise. Didn't know he was in it but totally recognisable.

Make sure you check it out though - it has its moments.

Watched Frankenstein (well most of it) last night... had drunk a glass of wine and kept drifting off during the first half... but when The Monster's Story section started, I was fully engaged and it woke me right up. Really good. Will have to watch again to see the first half properly. I know it has it's own thread, but it's not particularly worthy of that.

Unlike 1917, which of course is SO BAD it should have it's own thread saying so! 🙄

Anyone any thoughts on Down Cemetery Road?

I binned it halfway through episode one. Too much Very Earnest Acting for my liking, the characters were all just annoying, and I wasn't interested enough in the plot to care what actually happens.

We've quite enjoyed it. It's not Slow Horses but it's entertaining enough. However, consider that I wouldn't watch most of what is gushed about on here unless my eyeballs were superglued to a TV screen, so my opinion may or may not be useful to you.

I've heard little said about it and for my sins I'm not really that much into slow horses. Unpopular opinion.

That's kind of where I was.

It was treading comic book, almost a Bridget Jones -esq palette with very serious situations. Found it jarring. Those government ministers were like Morecambe and Wise. Their scenes were awful.

I've watched 2.

Hmm, undecided after one episode, so I'll try another.

Claire Danes makes use of her acting experience (see Homeland) as an emotional, disturbed individual; but it's an emotional relentlessness that I find quite wearing

Matthew Rhys is verging on comic villain, with significant side eyes and bad weather in the background

The two performances don't gel for me, but I'll give it another shot because the overall cast is so good

Agree with that. Keeping going with The Beast In Me though cos at least the writing is decent. Couldn't get past the second ep of Pluribus - just one idea dragged out as far as we could tell, not at all engaging.

Talking of beasts, I hope everyone's enjoying Kingdom on the bbc as much as I am. 🙂

K-Pop Demon Wotsits is a decent film, albeit extraordinarily cheesy.

10 & 13 year old boys were surprisingly well entertained by it in this house.

"West Side Ghost Story." etc etc.

I really enjoyed Series 1.

I've just started Billionaires Bunker (Spanish).  The first episode is encouraging.

I do seem to end up watching Spanish and German stuff regularly (original language + subtitles for preference).

I'm binge watching Invasion. The episodes are too long. They're padded out with touchy feely nonsense. One episode in particular I kept repeatedly skipping 10s forward. Often not enough happens within the near-hour-long episodes. There's also some ludicrousness. However it's sci fi so I carry on watching it... Means I'll have more than one episode of Pluribus to return to when I finish Invasion!

I did a few of them, but it's really a Spanish soap opera wrapped in a distopian sci-fi sheep fleece. I couldn't cope.

What - portraying Ted Bundy murdering women, who had nothing to do with Ed Gein so the director could fictiously make a link between Ed and Ted?!  Was just additional violence for the sake of it

Playdate on Amazon Prime.

Alan Ritchson (Reacher dude) seems to have taken on the "mismatched buddy" movie genre in a manner similar to Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Action comedy thing. It's actually not too bad, enough crude humour and car chases to keep 10-14yr olds entertained I reckon.

Wow.

What a beautiful,beautiful film.

Now..

It might just be that I come from a long line of woodsmen

It might be my age.

It might be I had a father that 'worked away'

It might be that I (for a while) 'worked away'

Whatever it was that flicked the switch,

it's a solid 9/10  from me.

i can remember feeling underwhelmed by the book, but then again id just read, and was hoping for, another 'and the ass saw the angel' which blew my mind.  i coulnt fathom how someone has the imagination to write that book, the blokes a genius.

so maybe its a good thing that its TDOBM that made it to the screen as im sure they couldnt do justice to ATASTA.

we'll watch it, and hopefully enjoy it, and itll maybe prompt me to read the book again, see what i think second time around.

I think this is my first contribution to the thread.

Los Anos Nuevos

In French or Spanish on France TV, I don't know if it's available in English on other platforms. We watched two at a time for the first six then binged the last four. I'm one of the most cynical sceptical intolerant of implausibility viewers out there and was totally taken in.

We came across Three Pines on Prime. Police procedural series, set around Montreal, with Alfred Molina(!) as the detective. Honestly, if it wasn't Canada and him I probably wouldn't have bothered; but it's decent - a bit of a Poirot/ early Shetland type vibe from the first couple of episodes. Wouldn't mind seeing more.

Also found S3 of Blue Lights through Sky (no iplayer here), but the Sky remote shat itself so will have to get a new one before we can watch it!

Apparently renewed for a 2 series.

Didn't expect that.

Mayor of Kingstown S4 - brilliant this time around.  A shift in dynamic with new characters.

Enjoying Landman S2. Again a shift in the characters. Very entertaining overall and some great bits of dialogue with a move into some more somber moments - especially episode 2.

Did ep 3 last night and Claire Dane's overacting face is really beginning to get on my wick. If you had a real life conversation with someone who did so many facial expressions in the course of one sentence I think you'd think it extremely bizarre.

I think it works as a portrayal of someone with serious psychiatric issues. The Beast in Me is about two quite crazy people at loggerheads.

12 minutes of emotion. No spoilers because of its length. It's an animation but don't watch it with your kids until you've watched it once

I've carried on with The Beast in Me. It's less overwrought in episodes 2&3, ep4 still to come...

We don't do Disney+, so Say Nothing missed us first time round, but it's now on C4. Well worth the watch (tho appreciate there are some questions marks about balance) only 3 episodes in so far

Kaiju number 8 on crunchyroll was an enjoyable watch.

2nd'd.

Also for those that like anime (some of these are available outside of Crunchyroll):

- Solo Levelling

- Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

- Demon Slayer

Only watched the first so far but enjoyed it. We also watched Trespasses with Lola Petticrew, the same actress, which was excellent
