totally agree, didnt think much to S5 at all, but really enjoyed the first 4 series.

watched a couple of excellent sets over the last 2 days, got to share them with you as i think youd all enjoy them. ironically both had people i cannot stand in them but still really enjoyed watching them.

firstly, although its not netflix (catch-up) we watched that Fred, Gino and Ramsay triple part jobbie. basically a lads road trip in each respective country with food, drink and just general pissing about. had us in stitches in places, gino's a real nutter 😀
(in case you were interested, its ramsay i cant stand)

and last night.....WOW! totally unexpected as i cannot abide ricky gervais, but wife had heard good things about After Life on netflix so we gave it a try.
suicidal bloke coming to terms (or not) with his wifes death from cancer you say? may be hard viewing you say? wrong! stunning tv! in parts hilarious, heart-wrenching, it went through all the emotions. we've lost my dad and my wifes nan to cancer this last few months and wife was in tears watching it, both with laughter and sadness.
exceptional dialogue, i really recommend you all watch this.

A new series of Secret City has started - Aussie political type thriller. One would probably have to watch the first series for the second to make sense. Nothing world class but both series would make a good bingeable watch over a weekend.

Just watched E1 of Afterlife. I can't stand Ricky Gervais but that was brilliant, good comedy usually does have some tragedy in with it. He's caught the self destruction of someone going through depression perfectly.

After Life is genuinely excellent, and you can certainly see Ricky Gervais has moved on and tackling the futility/meaning of life.

Production is fantastic and owes a little debt to Curb and Lead Balloon perhaps.

So much better than I was expecting. Netflix has given him the room to do what he wants, really really well.

Love all the little local stories, and a pitch perfect supporting cast.

Paul Kaye in particular.

Keeping on with Rake it's a perfect satire of the current Australian political system

I’ve just binge watched Homeland, a brilliant CIA series. Also really enjoyed Narcos, power (even with the terrible acting), stranger things and Luther. I found better call sol a little disappointing after breaking bad.
Sex Ed next.

We watched Behind The Curve last night....pretty funny, can't say that I was blown away by it.

Dawn Wall is now on Netflix and it shows some amazing stuff.

Also watched Valley Uprising, really really enjoyed that too.

Thinking that I may start on the civil war series.

Big fan of Gervais in Office and Extras, but pretty much hated everything else. Derrick is worse than Mrs Browns Boys...

After Life is a storming return to form!

Spoilers... not really, but just in case anyone complains

It's more of a mystery/thriller until the final reel. I thought it was an interesting and original premise, and well executed, but ended up with a conventional genre "hero dispatches the baddies gruesomely one by one" which was a bit disappointing.

Wormwood is my most recent watch. A mix of a documentary and dramatisation of events around the death of a CIA agent involved in the MK Ultra project. Very good indeed.

Having heard a lot about the film the twist/reveal was always coming and the reviews/chat had spoilt the surprise. Still enjoyed it though, coming in fresh it would have been better.

Didn't realise until today this is the same mountain as Free Solo.

So what's the difference here? (Apart from different climbers)

There are many different routes on that wall, Alex (free solo) was the first person to climb el capitan using no ropes. Tommy (Dawn Wall) was the first ever person to climb the dawn wall, leading climbing so no assistance from the rope.

Just finished After Life. Not greatly impressed by it. There were some funny bits - but some bits were just out of place I thought; the drug taking and overdose bits in particular.

We started The AO the other night. 3rd episode in and it seems very good.

Thanks for that. I watched Dawn Wall earlier and now on Free Solo.

Started to piece it all together.

Dawn Wall was an incredible story, very well done, with some surprising moments.

Love Death + Robots was fantastic. Anyone who enjoys 2000AD, future shock and twist in the tale type sf shorts will love this. Stand out for me was Alastair Reynolds’ "Beyond the Aquila Rift".

18 sf animated shorts in different styles all 5-17 minutes long

3 episodes into After life and I think it's the best comedy I've seen in many years. Almost comparable to peep show and spaced but maybe that's just because I've not found a comedy that I like for so long. I love the contrast of the silly humour with the sad and dark moments. I personally thought the drug taking scenes were extremely well done and very realistic and thought provoking about how people use drugs and can become dependent and things can spiral.

Love Death + Robots - moments of brilliance and something for everyone. Some bits NSFW (or young family).

Knightfall. A bit too much artistic licence in the way they treat the character Guillaume de Nogaret. (But it is a film story after all)

Just watched ‘The Night Comes For Us’.
Subtitled film with loads of action and brutal fight scenes.

The actor Iko Uwais from ‘The Raid’ co-stars in it so if you've seen that you’ll know what to expect.

Beautifully put. I think you perhaps have to have experienced depression either yourself or in a very close friend or family member to find it relatable, which in turn lets you see the humour, odd though it seems.

I would not normally watch Ricky Gervais. After Life is brilliantly written, funny, and tear-jerking at the same time.

If you're only laughing at the swearing I think you're missing the point.

I can recommend formula 1 drive to survive on Netflix after watching the whole series over the weekend. A really good insight into the sport and the decisions around it from the same director as Senna and Amy.

It even made me consider going to Silverstone this year until i saw the unbelievable prices to watch cars go round in circles.

We watched After Life last night. Absolutely brilliant! I don't know how he does it? Hysterically funny but with some moments of genuine pathos. A difficult mix to achieve.

One of the opening scenes, where the ginger kid calls him a peado, had Mrs Binners laughing so hard I thought she was going to have a seizure

Watching the last episode of After Life tonight and apart from maybe The Office, is definitely his best work.
Don't think I've ever watched anything that can have me crying with laughter one minute, and trying to hold back tears the next. The whole cast are excellent and the vaginal yeast scene had me spurting Dr Pepper out of my nose. One of the few programmes that I can't wait to see a second series of.

See, I quite like Gervais as a human being based on some of his social media output, but I find him about as funny as trepanning. The Office was good despite him rather than because of him, Crook and Freeman drove it for me.

That said, would I like After Life or should I give it a wide berth?

There's actual acting in it that has moved well away from David Brent.

I'd take a punt on it.

He stills has thing about trying to be offensive for the sake of it, bit it's better than the sum of its parts in that respect.

I can’t stand his previous stuff this however is brilliant. It’s still has a touch of Gervais is Gervais in a comedy by Gervais but not enough to ruin it.

I can't recommend The Dawn Wall (Netflix) enough. I thought it was a much better story than Free Solo. (Amazon / Google for rental)

Watched them both back to back, and Dawn Wall twice.

I also preferred the sincerity of the film making too.

But they're both fantastic films.

If you haven't seen it already Valley Uprising is also very good. I watched it after Free Solo and Dawn Wall but if anyone hasn't seen any of them start with Valley Uprising to give a wider context to the other two.
