Any recommendations that won't break the bank?

Try a Travelodge or similar in the city rather than up West. Less demand at weekends as everything is shut.

Also, look out for theatre coach trips from Sheffield/South Yorkshire that come with accommodation, they usually stay in the City and indicate the bargain spots.

Cheap, central, clean, some locations better than others for noise etc: University rooms.

Not really applicable but worth knowing for last minute bookings, use the code MONDAY in the Accor hotels web site on a Monday or Tuesday for cheap rooms available for Fri-Sun nights the weekend ahead. Usually there are hotels in Blackfriars / Southwark for £40-60.

Don't know about London specifically, but have you looked on airbnb?

I stayed here. London Continental Seems there are always rooms available and the twin rooms get very cheap if you book on the day (£45 IIRC). Rooms are clean enough. Near to a busy road if you're put on the wrong side of the building.
