As above, am on O2 and they are not yet supporting and official unlock. Am off to sharm and want to get a local SIM card whilst I am there.

Never jail broke one of my phones and know it voids the warranty. Also heard that syncing with pc reverts to factory settings and therefore undoes the jailbreak

If the above is true, would the warranty still be intact?

Any advice on the above would be much appreciated.

Jail breaking isn't the same as unlocking, and, AFAIK, jail breaking won't allow you to use the phone on a different network.
I stand to be corrected on this, but it's my understanding.

Do you really need to take your phone abroad? Couldn't you just take an old phone with a prepay SIM?

Buy a £10 nokia for when you're in sharm.

Not for calls, just for internet, don't want to pay the stupid prices the hotel charges for wifi.

Borrow an unlocked phone? I normally take two with me - one roaming with my UK number and another with a local SIM.

The hotel "charges" for WIFI ?

You need a better hotel, not an unlocked phone 😉

Aren't you going on holiday to escape being connected, even if only for a short while? Believe it or not, you CAN manage it.

By far the norm abroad.

We had free WIFI in our room in the hotels both times we went to Sharm.
And a wired connection too.

Check the O2 website, I unlocked my iPhone 4 via the website for free. It might not apply to new phones tho.

By far the norm abroad.

Varies based on country. Almost always free in USA, pot luck in Europe, mostly free, but sometimes costs.

If it's a work trip, then expense the cost of wifi.

If it isn't a work trip, then just go to cafes for a drink once every couple of days and use their wifi, surely you don't need email or web every ten seconds on holiday.

By far the norm abroad.

Not in any hotel I've been in!
