[Closed] Need to get a cheap, economical car for running around type job

Hi...it's been a long time since I bought a car, and the missus bought the current family car (Peugeot 307) from a dealer a couple of years ago.
So I have a new job on the horizon which involves a bit of running around and site visits, and possibly (depending on how the money works out) commuting 45 mins each way daily.

Limited budget, say £1k, and of course cheap insurance.

I really don't know where to start looking, so I guess I'm looking for the STW collective wisdom and experience on such matters.

Thanks

At that money I would go for a small petrol engine. Fiesta 1.2 or Yaris are good cars for small and cheap, Hyundai are also very cheap and worth a look.

Alternatively – big ugly Jag S type 2L. Basically a car so horrendous that no one wants one and you get a lot for your money.

Thanks...my bro in law said to me last night that his honda is v cheap insurance and looks like such an old banger that no-one goes near it! Sounds like sound advice 🙂

Just wish the area was a little smaller so I could bike it. Still trying to work that one out...

I have Yaris - impeccable.
I had old Mazda 323 - 130k, 13 year old car, cost an MOT, a service and a tyre in 18 months / 12k of driving.

Cheap motoring = MkII Nissan Micra.
Should be able to buy, insure and still have £2-300 to spunk on bike tat you don't need. 😀

Don't bother with Ford Ka. Noisy, cramped and prone to rust. You could do a lot better for the cash.

Hmmm yes, used to have a Ka too, and that was an amazing car but it had to go when we needed to put a toddler in the back plus pushchair etc (no rear doors = hassle) and it started to cost a regular £300 ish each MOT.
In my mind for my manly outdoorsy job I have this:

but in reality 'll probably end up with this:

Though it would be awesome to do it all in a Reliant Robin.

Is this motor in addition to the peugeot you have just now or instead of? If its a second car Does it need to have rear seats? Astra vans can be had for buttons, they're a fairly typical manly site visit vehicle and the diesel ones give remarkable MPG, around 60mpg.
