Avast, We need new/some internets in our new house!

live in central exeter, so connection speed shouldnt be an issue, looking for something cheap, with a high usage limit.

as we have no connection at all at the moment, we have been advised by BT that to get a BT line connected will cost us £125
cripes!
i pressume, many service providers will require a BT line to operate.

then we noticed, a letter in the pile of post for the previous resident, which turned out to be a "come back to talk talk, we miss you" kind of letter.

while we have been diconnected from talk talk also, they only want £60 for a connection.

this is getting confusing!

any reccomendations, or advice on who to go for, or any other suggestions?
and why?

spanks all 🙂

I'd rather eat glass than go through the crap of getting BT to put in a connection again. Literally counting the days til I can get shot of them again. Weeks of delays, surly replies and lies. And for the year that followed "the system is down just now so we can't access your data" on any occasion we've needed to contact them, including today when we asked for our MAC code

When BT was privatised it was split into chunks (all technically still part of the same group but different companies), the bit that provides the physical infrastructure (a new line in your case) is BT Openreach, who only deal with telecoms companies. These people e.g BT Retail or Talk Talk then pass the cost of connecting that line onto you the consumer.

Some companies will arrange your new line/reconnection and pass on less of the cost as a sweetener for you to sign up with them. Obviously you can only get your line reconnected by your broadband provider if they are also providing your phone service (line rental etc.). If you wanted broadband from a company with no phone capability, then you'd have to get a BT line at £125 and then pay the minimum line rental on it...currently £8-10 a month I think?

Edit* Not sure whether you can get a talk talk phone only deal and then have a different broadband provider.

Try and get cable. Virgin normally do offers for cheap/free connections. The speed is really good all the time and you don't need a phone line to use it. Cheapest is a 10Mb down / 500Kb up for 20£ or something like 21£ with a phone line.

Only catch if you transfer more than 3GB on peak hours they restrict your bandwidth to a quarter of what it normally is, it returns after the peak hours are over - you can find details about that on their website though it is a bit hidden. Their highest - but expensivish package- does not have those constraints.

You don't need the phone line if you live in a cable area. they just discount their broadband if you do get a phone line from them as well as the broadband.
