Having spent the last few months (and coming few) with my head in the books, I've lost some fitness, hardly ridden my bike, done no winter climbing etc. Also, someone close to me has arthritis which comes and goes and causes some distress. So I'm thinking of setting myself a challenge, maybe for this time next year to aim for in fitness terms and raise money for ARC charity. Thing is, I'm not sure what. Would like to get to the top of a big old mountain - not quite Everest, but something more than 'just' a walk up the tourist path of Kilimanjaro.

Alternatively, something like a triathlon but not an ordinary city one. Out in the wilds a bit would be good. Or a big old bike tour. Or an adventure race-type thing.

Anyone done anything like this - experiences and ideas appreciated.

Tour Divide, South Downs Double, Trans Rockies... there's loads out there. Depends on how much time you really want to devote to training and how much time you can invest in the event itself.

Make sure the project is reasonably efficient in that if you are attempting to raise money your costs are a very small % - this is the major criticise of many adventure fundraising things

Then in order to get much sponsorship you need a high media profile so probably something unusual.

Good luck, tis a worthy thing to do.

Ben Nevis Triathlon. I'm doing it.. and I'm a crap runner and a nearly crap swimmer. It's in September so you've got plenty of time to train. 1.9km swim in a Loch, 90km MTB ride then run up and down the Ben - 21km.

Good on ya - Don't do anything with 'tri' involved though! 3 Peaks?

Well I'm a passbale swimmer although pretty un-trained and a truly crap runner. So this will be my challenge for the year. See you there 🙂 My plan is to not drown on the swim, trundle the bike ride then save it all for the run/scramble.

how about Marathon des Sables, I know some who's done that, and said it was pretty extreme at times. Although you'd have to brush up on the running obviously 😕

See you there 🙂

I think it will have to be next year. Was thinking about it last night and thats some serious training needed if I'm gonna win ;-).

I'm aiming to complete.

I can do pretty much any bike event and finish it, and the motivation to go from say 20th place to 17th place isn't quite as strong as if it were a case of completing or failing.

Hence the tri 🙂
