Bear with me....

I'm in the process of re-ripping all my CDs to lossless and storing them on a NAS (iomega IX-200).

To do this I've set up a new login account on my macbook and set the itunes library folder location to be on the NAS. This is so I can keep my existing library on the macbook until everything is sorted.

Playing music from the NAS via Airport Express works fine with Filebrowser and or Airplayer on an iPhone.

My main issue is that I can't figure out how to make playlists. I can only play albums.

I've found a few workarounds on various forums but they're well over my head. Is there an easy way?

Obviously I can use the Remote app but the macbook needs to be turned on for this. Not much use if my wife takes it away on business!

Not certain, but I'm pretty sure that in order to create playlists, you have to do it in iTunes, which means having a computer running OSX connected to the network.
If the host computer is removed from the network, then the system falls on it's ass, as far as I can see. Remote is only that, a remote control. You can usually access a NAS remotely, if an app is available, but I don't know if that would help with playlists.
I hardly ever use them, hence my uncertainty. Re-reading your post, I can't see why you can't create a playlist as it stands, you just go into File> New> Playlist, or ?N, or File> New> Smart Playlist, or ? ?N. It should be straightforward.
Of course, if the Mac does get taken away, you're stuffed. I'd look around for a secondhand Mini, and hook that up with the same Library, that way it just sits there as a media streamer. You can link it to your TV if you like, with an HDMI cable, and run movies through it. All other devices work off the same network, using the Airport.
It's entirely possible I've missed something glaringly obvious, though,I usually do!

Thanks

i can remote control the music already but only according to album or artist.

My aim would be to create playlists with itunes and then store the playlists on the nas, from where i could access them from the iphone, without the macbook needing to be switched on.

Can't find an app to do it though :-/

Ah, right, I see. That's the sticking point, the NAS is merely a storage device and server, it doesn't really have an OS of its own, so it can't have a facility for playlists, AFAIAA. Only iTunes, or similar, which is the controlling application, can have playlists set up. I don't think it would be possible to find any kind of app to do what you want, because there's nothing on the NAS for it to run on.

Yea that's the conclusion I'm coming to!

The NAS apparently has an' itunes server' feature, which is what got my hopes up.

I think you are both correct here.

With my limited knowledge the NAS is purely somewhere to store the media files. I think the only reason the manufacturers ship the drives with folders ready made i.e. iTunes is just a gimmick so that people think they do more than just storage.

I have a NAS drive that I use for my home business and it works fine for me but remote access for my business partner is intermittent. Any ideas on that one?

you would be better off running a media server and connecting it to the NAS.

Check out subsonic, can create playlists and view albums from album art etc and play any file and all from your web browser, or phone, ipad etc

Currently i use this setup from a linux server but may try to migrate it to a rasberry pi or similar setup (not tested this yet though)

Curvature- presume you have a static IP address setup?

Dobo- thanks but I'm trying to avoid another power consuming, heat producing device in the office.

I'll definitely check out Subsonic though

Raspberry Pi on order, which should sort out most things, presuming Openelec can be used to create playlists

Apparently the analogue audio output on the Pi is rubbish though, so I'll have to buy a new 7.1 amp to connect to the Pi with HMDI 🙂

i know what you mean but the rasberry pi is probably about as low power as you can get to do the job of a media server which subsonic (or some other server) could run on.

using the ras pi as a server the audio wouldnt come from the ras pi but over the network to your audio device on your laptop, phone etc

oh and any server really should have a static ip imo
