I've got a set up where I stream .avi video and music through my PS3 over the wifi network using external hard drives attached to my laptop and PC. I want to be able to stream without having to attach the HDD, so I though about getting a NAS drive to store all my media which I would hardwire directly to the router using an ethernet cable.

Will the NAS drive be slower at streaming the video than an HDD attached to the computer. Obviously both methods involve streaming over the wifi, but it seems to be fast enough now using locally attached drives. Anything else to bear in mind?

Any recommendations for a 1TB drive for under £150?

Netgear ReadyNas Duo! iTunes and SqueezeServer are installed as standard. Also comes with incremental auto-backup built in.

Available bare, 0.5Tb. 1.0Tb. You can go to 2Tb mirrored. Upgrading is a simple hotswap process, followed by a reboot.

You can network more than one NAS on your network.

Netgear still have a promotion for free HDD's.

If you are streaming over wifi, you may have interruptions, especially if there is other traffic on your WLAN. I recommend installing ethernet infrastructure. (see my entry on the thread about Fetch TV)

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the other tread.

If you're streaming over wi-fi, that's your bottle neck, doesn't matter if the hdd is attached directly to the router or a shared via a computer. Unless maybe if your computer is from 1998, and probably not even then.

I've had various NAS boxes: LaCie, 2 Buffalo, they all died after a couple years, but they're hard drives, so that's half-expected. Currently have a Seagate Blackarmor, have had it for a few months, no problems yet, just during setup it interfered with my USB printer which was also plugged directly into the router, but a router firmware upgrade fixed that. So pretty happy with it. And its cheap. 2TB for 165 quid at dabs.

PS: I've had problems with patchy wi-fi connection interrupting streaming video or audio a long time ago -- changed the channel that the router transmits on, and never again. Woudln't worry TOO much about it...

Have bought a number of NAS over the last couple of years; 3 WD MyBookWorld's which all died and 4 Icybox's of which two were killed by one client but not sure if it was the hardware or the client as I have not had any problems with them. I have also recently bought a Buffalo 1TB Linkstation which seems to be okay but at times the disk is quite noisy.

I am tempted by the Netgear products but don't think you can buy the ReadyNas in any flavour for under £150!

thanks theEye. The wifi seems to cope fine with streaming, so it doesn't sound like I need to worry about the drive itself.
