You know, like Eider, Spyder, Schoffel etc.

I seem to have killed the insulation in the lining of my ski/winter/generally-big-warm-dog-walking jacket, and, to be fair, it had had a good life. So, I could pick something up from Mountain Warehouse/Decathlon/Go Outdoors, but a quick eBay suggests I can pick up a second-hand, posh brand, few-hundred-quids-worth-when-new, jacket for the same price. And, buying second hand stuff makes Greta Thunberg dislike me less.

So, what are some brand I can be looking out for?

Kjus. Lovely gear, mega pricey.

Premium brand you say, Bogner! Very, very expensive and, dare I say it, generally absolutely minging! Usually a very busy design with lots of gold and phrases written on them, favoured by the Russians . I like looking out for them when I'm boarding, fair brightens up my day! Get one and don't forget the photo!

Do your really mean posh, or do you mean good? Friends dont let friends wear Spyder, unless the friend is a European ex-pro racer

On a more serious note, Kjus is an expensive brand, classy and understated. Or you could go for the usual suspects, Marmot, Arcteryx, Vist, Dainese, all good but pricey.

Okay, I mean good (and reasonably stylish) (and not what 50 year old tubby Germans think is stylish)

Kjus stuff is amazeballs. Though I could only afford a baseball cap at the time. Lost it on an autobahn exploring the top speed of an MX5. Cried. Salewa if you want to look like you're a pisten bully driver on their day off.

I got some Bergans salopets from sportpursuit at the end of a season. They are brilliant: warm, well made and really durable.

I finally killed my Burton AK kit after 12 year's of use: including two where I hadn't a clue how to snowboard & so dragged them repeatedly down the mountain on my arse and knees. I think my brother in law had them for about 4 years before that, before handing them to me.

Salomon gear is still top notch, despite being available in Sports Direct!
Dainese

Plenty of other overpriced brands that are worn just to show off the logo in the cabin 😉

It does depend on the “look” you’re going for!
Salewa paired with a beaten up pair of Hestra gloves has a certain “old mountain pro” look.

I'm imagining the current Orange range from Fusalp (saw a women in the full matching kit one day in Meribel o_O).

Menswear not so sure, if you just want it for walking the dog waterproof and insulated anything will be reasonable I'd say. My personal preference is Picture 🙂

Which is a good time to remind you that before Red Bull there was Willy Bogner...

Moncler for you sir.

More seriously I generally find Arc'teryx gear long lasting and good quality. See also peak performance.

The nicest ski jackets I've seen amongst my skiing posse are the Norwegian brand Tensor and Arcteryx. Neither are cheap. Not been impressed with Spyder stuff or my dads Schoefell jacket, which worked well but was a bit flimsy and didn't last very long.

But beware..all brands have their good stuff and their cheap stuff sold at premium prices for the townies. The North Face for example are no better than the standard stuff from Decathlon for a quarter of the price unless you get their Summit Series stuff which is up there with the best money can buy.

I've never been able to justify dropping big bucks on expensive gear for my 6 days a year ski holiday but the best jacket I've ever had was a Columbia one I got in the sales. I used it for about 8 years before retiring from skiing duties, but still use it for walking and general crappy weather duties and to be fair it looks as good as it did the day I bought it so been impressed with that.

Forget about the environmental credentials some companies claim. It's all marketing. All the jackets are made from the same materials so can't see how the plastic one company makes their jackets from is any more sustainable or environmentally friendly than the plastic another brand makes their jackets from.

No. There's a reason it's cheap*

*It's not bad, it's just minging.

If you sign up to the Norrona website, you get to access the outlet page. Some really expensive kit not as expensive as it was.

Spyder gear is just truly minging.

It’s made with wacky European people in mind.

They do actually make some brilliant race gear and race training suits. The stuff you get in Snow & Rock etc is for the all the gear, no idea brigade

Best non race gear I’ve ever had his quality North Face stuff
