Except, it's not is it, because the genders are wrong. And in any case, why would you want to join two 'A' ends of USB?

My experience of gender changers is they're invariably used by people trying to bypass measures put in place specifically to prevent them from doing something stupid, like plugging parallel printers into a serial port.

Someone I knew had an external usb drive that had the 'wrong' connector on it and he lost the cable. He used one of those to join two ordinary cables together so the resulting cable had the 'right'(for him) same connector at each end.

An "ordinary" cable, in so far as such a thing exists in the wacky world of USB, would have plugs on the end rather than sockets. The only cable you could connect to that would be a USB extension cable, and you'd still have an 'A' end at both ends.

We're, as you can see, overrun with toad spawn and this pond and the one with the fish in it now have lotos of white bubbles on it where the pump is circulating the water.

I have one of those. Mine is for charging up a usb power pack. You plug phones etc into the power pack to charge them in an emergency then use the gender changer to charge the power pack. If it is of no use to you you are welcome to send it my way as then I could charge two at once.
