What albums do you listen to that haven't dated? i.e. if it was released tomorrow it would still be the hit it was when it was first released?

I'm currently listening to Def Cut - Street Level 2002 and it could be released now and sound great! There are other older albums I think still sound great - Stereo MC's for one....

Give me a list worth downloading....

Cheers

Yes. Serious.

The Doors, Cream, AC/DC - good ones.

I also think Janes Addiction are pretty timeless. Along with The Stranglers.

..... and The Velvet Underground....

If I'm limited to one, it would have to Peter Frampton Comes Alive 😀 I'd buy it now. Still sounds good IMO

Talking Heads...77 / Speaking in Tongues / Fear of Music / Remain in the Light / Stop Making Sense...
They all still sound fresh. Still amazes me how '77 (from 1977) was coming out at the same time as a lot of the disco tripe and punk ..but so different for the period.

Thinking Leftfield Leftism and some Utah Saints stuff. Also some less well known trancy stuff from the mid to late 90s like Union Jack ( http://www.discogs.com/UnionJack-There-Will-Be-No-Armageddon/release/42861 ).

Stick on your old Pixies albums and try and find a bad song - they still sound awesome.

Janes Addiction would be the antithesis of this for me zedsdead. Ripped all their old stuff to mp3 a while back and couldn't believe how weak it sounded. Used to love them but I guess my ears have changed - ymmv and all that.

I reckon the drum machine on the "backing tape" at the start of Stop Making Sense has dated quite badly, but it's still a good album. And while the Pixies albums I have do have many good songs on them the production lets them down for me. Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience hasn't dated very badly, which perhaps goes to show how much rock music still lives in Jimi Hendrix's shadow.

Rainbow "Rising"
Still listen to it all the time, just the finest heavy rock album ever made, Blackmore and Dio at their best

Also still enjoy Big Country "The Crossing" some great tracks with that very distinctive sound
About to be heard again soon when they tour with Mike Peters on vocals, looking forward to it very much

Guns and Roses' "Appetite for Destruction"
and I'm amazed how fantastic Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds sound (saw it live a few years ago), it must have been early 80s (or even late 70s); Rick Wakeman on the other hand..

I would have to rummage through my Dads CDs to find a lot of this stuff. That makes it dated IMO. LOL

Not to say it isn't good. But a lot if this stuff wouldn't pass the Dance floor test at a night club.

Which is why threads such as this are pointless. One might as well call it, "What music do you really like that you still listen to?"

Exactly. I dug out an old Psychedelic Furs album (from 1980) the other day and was surprised how good it sounds. But dated? Of course it bloody is!
I've got some old stuff I bought last month that isn't dated 🙂

Not really - There's plenty of music that would fit that criteria for me but that I didn't post because it clearly has dated. I can be objective enough about it to say that without seeing that as a critique on my music taste or denigrating the tracks in question - most music does date, it's not a negative statement IMO...

Chris Evans played 'Me and the farmer' by the Housemartins before the 8 o'clock news this morning. I remember listening to that on vinyl (London 0 Hull4) when I was still at school. I'm not far off 40 now. Still sounded super-'fresh'.

No. Really.

Some of the tracks posted here sound as dated as a out of date tin of dates.

All music dates FFS.

As much i love many of the bands listed above i think music does date. For example Primal Scream are just about to do a tour playing the entire Screamadelica album. Laast time i saw that was in Glastonbury, i was about 17 years old and ripped to the tits on a lot of acid. I'm not sure if today's 17 year olds would have any interest in that at all? I might be completely wrong thou.

By way of an experiemnt i'll pop along to said gig and see what the yoof of today make of it all. I think music has changed, it's just us old gits that have stayed the same.
