Do you reckon you could?

I watched The Limey again last night, I'm pretty much anti-violence and capital punishment etc (and yes, a total girl's blouse) but I wondered if the worst happened (whatever that may be for you eg your child is murdered) could/would you go so far off the rails that you would want to do it and would/could you carry it out?

When I was younger I always maintained that I could take a life if needs be, now being somewhat older just seeing someone shout at a dog makes me cry, so probably not.

Sounds more Brooklyn that glesga.

I'm sure if it came to it, I mean if someone did something to my wife and son, then yeh I could. Probably run them down or something detached like that.

yes, i am a firm believer that the scum of the earth that take a life (and i'm not counting accidents, i'm talking murder) deserve everything that's coming to them.

All this namby pamby human rights nonsense that you hear about murderers and rapists getting payouts because they have to slop out in jail really gets my goat. I honestly believe that the family's of the victims should get to choose the punishment.

So in essence I would, and I would enjoy it, and it would be slow involving many fine tools from my garage, B&Q and then some very hungry dogs.......sue me

Jebus I didn't expect that, how naive :|. So if you murder someone for murdering someone it's OK?

I am into restorative justice btw, though perhaps not your take on it.

"The mark of a civilised society is how it treats its criminals" (& I would add "victims")

I cant be arsed to dig three graves.

In fact I didnt realise this murdering business was such graft. Im going to settle for the indiscriminate poisoning of the water supply instead. Mass murder: Piece of piss.

I've always taught my daughter that it's wrong to take the life of another person. To murder someone in revenge for killing her would be to dis-honour her life.

yup, before you know where you are, there's bodies everywhere as it all spirals horribly out of control, you are killing people faster than you can get rid of 'em and y' being chased all over the east end by Vinnie Jones in an old rover. Never get a quiet night in again.

Revenge rarely leaves a saitsfying feeling for most things and i think we can see the death penalty does very little to prevent murders (the US would be a good example).

If you are of the mind to commit horrific acts then your view of these acts is a little different to that of a 'normal' person.

I know i could never do it. Al, Druidh and me will be hosting a slumber party this weekend with baby rabbits and tutu's on.

If someone were to do something to my boys then yes I could. And I'd be happy to dig the two graves first as well as my life would already be over.

12 years this month since the last murder in Balerno Al.

That's if you don't count the local folk clubs version of Flower of Scotland.

An eye for an eye leaves us all blind.

If it was kill or be killed tho? Dunno - I doubt it even then and its hard to see what circumstances would lead to kill or be killed

Where family is involved, no problems.

If someone did something sufficiently henious to my wife or kids, then I think that I would have a strong urge to kill them in revenge, initially at least, but I'm pretty sure I if it came to it I wouldn't be able to look them in the face and actually do it.

It would be different if something was about to happen to them.

Are you being sarcastic? Its a quote from Gandhi - and a great truth. You only have to look to the middle east to see the truth of it

If my life got to the stage where I felt I needed to kill someone for revenge then it would clearly have also reached the stage where I would top myself afterwards.

"Tis more noble to forgive, and more manly to despise, than to revenge an injury."

Franklin.

"In taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing it over, he is superior."

Bacon

I like these ones. Learn them by rote for your homework this weekend. You will be tested on Monday morning.

Hmm I doubt it.
From a not very good film but I liked this bit (no idea whether it was made up for the film or it is a custom)

Everyone who loses somebody wants revenge on someone, on God if they can't find anyone else. But in Africa, in Matobo, the Ku believe that the only way to end grief is to save a life. If someone is murdered, a year of mourning ends with a ritual that we call the Drowning Man Trial. There's an all-night party beside a river. At dawn, the killer is put in a boat. He's taken out on the water and he's dropped. He's bound so that he can't swim. The family of the dead then has to make a choice. They can let him drown or they can swim out and save him. The Ku believe that if the family lets the killer drown, they'll have justice but spend the rest of their lives in mourning. But if they save him, if they admit that life isn't always just... that very act can take away their sorrow.

I think any-one who's prepared to say on a public forum that they would murder some-one else, should either take a moment to actually reflect on what that means, or perhaps, seek professional help...

Really nickc and what if someone took your child, if you have one, tortured them for weeks on end then fed them to the dogs would you still thinking seeking revenge is the wrong thing to do?

Havinh never been in the position where I feel I could kill someone then I can't really comment. And untill you are actually put in that position then I don't think anyone can.

i think, if the situation was right, anyone could.

if its upsetting enough, and the situation came up, where you could, for want of a better term "end" someone, yet remain totally removed from the situation, i think most people could and would

insert molester of your own child here:

[img] [/img]

with time, i think one would see reason and logic over hot bloded vengance, and even forgiveness (any normal person)
but in the heat of the moment.
i know i would

Full stop, Honestly? I dunno what I'd do if that happened to my children. Does it make me less of a "man" or parent if I've not contemplated bloody murder in a scenario that is so infinitesimally unlikely to happen?

No, but that the usual comment, isn't it? that's why that particular "totally unlikely" scenario is generally chosen, to level exactly that critism at people.

It's never going to happen; the murder and mutilation of my children, so making claims about what you'd do to the mythical perpetrators of fictitious crimes is mostly pointless bravado, hence my "take a look at yourself" statement, and really honestly if you still want to kill something after you've thought about for a while, then does that not make you a bit sad...

Ah, but how many have said

"It's never going to happen; the death and mutilation of my children by a careless/speeding/drunk driver"

That's much more likely, and I know which I'm more concerned about, looking at standards of people's driving and some of the views about speeding expressed on another thread today.
