Back when I had more dealings with DEFRA some of the folks I knew there said the RSPB would lobby them constantly about countryside issues that had nothing to do birds or birds habitats.
They found that RSPB members would usually have strong opinions on the countryside and the RSPB had a fair bit of money so they would get involved
They were quietly one of the key players in the fox hunting ban I seem to remember being told
Yeah, the RSPB has turned itself into a Nature Society. Current magazines and info I get are definitely targeted away from Baby Robins to more Field Nature Environments..
