MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Off to Morzine in a couple of weeks - any tips ?
Have fun.
Don't break anything.
Are the lifts open? it makes quite a difference.
A few will be, most open on the 26th though.
XC or DH?
Start off carefully! You've got all week, so don't "go large" on day one, wait till you get your eye in a bit......
Start off every morning with two mutzigs
flying down on the 25th - XC for me (DH is for younger and braver souls )
Make sure you get over the Swiss side.
I went out there for the first time about 8 years ago never ridden a full sus or downhill before (went out on my brother's dh bike). If your comfortable on a bike it's nothing much more unless you go searching for the harder trails, is just longer!
The main thing which bothers people is the breaking bumps so if your not doing them already do a couple sets of pushups each evening and get a powerball or simular to strengthen up your arms you'll thank me when you get back!
As people have also said you've a week or so don't go large on the first day, order American's (Steak and Chip sandwiches) from the snack shack (if its still there) and have fun.
Ride Morgins, not Les Gets.
Ride Morgins and Les Gets. There's good riding all over. Have an explore and get to limits of the lifts. You'll end up doing a little climbing or the odd dull trail but its nice to travel around.
Plenty of shops for spares in town but its rrp rather than crc prices. Worth having a few spares like brake pads, mech hanger, tubes/sealant
There can be all kinds of weather. Take sunblock and waterproof shorts
Have a burger and a serious Leffe in K2 in Les Gets
And the green downhill from the Chavannes is easy but lovely.
Take it easy on the first day take time to get in tune with long descents, also if you are tired you are more likely to fall.
Get a map, a guide book, a whole area pass. Go explore. Visit Switzerland, eat in the mountain refuges like La Laspisa or Refuge de Cheserey. They accept Euros so you won't need to get a load of Swiss Francs.
Top tip- the baggage trolleys in Geneva airport need Ch Franc coins- which are the same size as 2p coins.
Braking bumps, lol.
Everyone was moaning about them when I went, nothing particularly bad, about typical for Fort William after a season of riding.
I found Swiss National to be horrible (could have been my bike where I had to lean out over the inside of the back wheel to turn any quicker than the Exxon Valdez) but the French National was fun (until I swan dived off the rooty boulder corner just inside the woods).
Don't jump the bridge.
we are there in a few weeks too, few days DH culminating with the PPDS.
last year we had biblical rains, ended up giving 50 donkers for a plastic boiler suit to ride in! so it might be worth packing one this time. be worth it if you dont have to use it!
my first time i was panicked in to taking loads of spare pads, tubes, hangers etc. but everything is readily available and never noticed that much of a price hike...
get a guide (dont pay for one) just see if you can tag along with a local or regular who can show you some of the off-piste stuff, especially under super-morzine & down to Montriond. puts you in good stead for next time!
pub tip: bec jaune brewery
My top tip is for if you are flying. Remember to take a 2 Euro coin for the trolleys at the airport!
The main thing which bothers people is the breaking bumps
Won't be m/any this early. By the end of the season they can be awful though.
I went out having never once been off the ground on my bike, by the end I was loving the jumping and even did the smaller of the two jumps at the bike park (this is going back a few years to when it first opened, it may have changed now).
