No but a phal is my goto curry so will be interesting to compare it to my local.

I really must make the effort to get down there.

Missed out on the foot long sausage rolls and big daddy breakfast. Maybe they still do them? Could be an excellent weekend.

I tried one of their ‘hottest curry ever’ things last year, tasted like freeze dried ‘chicken’ in tomato juice with a million chillies. Yeah it was hot, but equally completely tasteless at the same time.

This is what I always think about uber-hot curries. I like to taste the ingredients.

Pretty much what you'd expect with a supermarket curry, tasteless.

Which they aren’t, as it happens. I try to keep a few of the Iceland ones in the freezer as emergency after-pub nosh, and each variety is totally different to the others. I’m not entirely sure I want to try a Carolina Reaper curry, I like a bit of heat, but things like that, and Phaal, seem more like macho posturing. I’ve got a few Reapers, and I manage quite well by slicing off a thin sliver, chopping it into powder, and adding it to a lighter curry. It gives me all the heat I need, with flavour. Super-hot curries really don’t have much flavour, it’s like super-chilled beer, there’s no flavour in that, either.

Is that true though or is it dependent on the person eating it? I'm a bit of a wuss so stop at a madras (whether restaurant or supermarket) as past that and the heat takes away the taste/enjoyment but I figure people who eat vindaloos/phaals (and aren't in obvious pain/doing it for a bet) are dealing with the heat better so taste it more?

It depends on the curry but also where it's from, some just make them silly hot and don't bother with the flavour.

Depends on the person. I find anything less than a vindaloo tasteless & bland & even these can be a bit mild unless asked for extra hot.

Even funnier, I find they vary in quality quite a bit.

I do love some of the macho bullshit that crops up in curry threads.
"Yeah, unless its made from thermonuclear ultra hot dorset napalm chilles they just taste bland".

*swoons*

I disagree - a well-made very hot curry can still be bursting with lots of flavour. Just use tomatoes, onion, chilli powder and garam masala and it will just taste 'thin'.

Interesting that the complete opposite seems to be the theme this time, I like them all but very rarely have anything like a vindaloo as there's many other dishes I prefer.

I had that recently and didn't rate it at all! My preferred one *used to be* the Asda Extra hot vindaloo as it was made by the curry chain 'Mumtaz' and branded as Asda. Unfortunately they have either changed supplier or vastly changed the recipe as it's nowhere near as good these days.

The Sainsbury's ones are a complete waste of money.

I've had one of the Morrison's phals. It was hot and reasonably tasty. Not as hot as many curry house phals as I was able to eat it without combustion. Is say hotter than the Sainsbury one.

Another to try Kimbers.

Or you could by salt infused tomato sauce with a bit of chilli powder from a supermarket.

That's because you either have no sense of taste or are eating shit curry.

It's interesting that from my experience Indians see heat as just another flavour, so you could get served a very spicy curry which will be full of different spices and flavours but without the chilli heat. Conversely you could be served a dish that is described as not very spicy which will blow your socks off!

My signature beef and coconut curry is full of spices and flavours, but doesn't contain much chilli and isn't very hot.

well no arse burning runny shits happened after this one .

you got to actually try something before you can voice an opinion /slag it off .

Mrs T has popped a few in the freezer for future research  they do make for a quick curry and pop a bit more meat in for a very tasty hot curry .

If you live somewhere with no takeaway between the pub and your house then you did not chose wisely.

I enjoy lots of flavoursome curries, some packed with heat, some not, but then I have a sense of taste.
