Monday 19th "Bank holiday"

Only just got an appointment for an ultrasound at the local community docs in the next town over so I have to assume that will be cancelled but haven't heard anything yet. GPs are usually closed too so I wonder what happens to all those appointments that were booked as they are hard to come by for a lot of people.

I’m being told that the earlier vagueness from govt has now been removed

Where did you find this? I can't see an update.

My bosses aren't sure they'll let us have it off if it's discretionary 🤬

Self-employed.
What’s a bank holiday again?

It's something you don't get if you choose to be self employed.

Just like creative tax accounting isn't something you get the benefit of if you choose to be employed.

Swings and roundabouts I guess ?

@wooksterbo
I'm in a different part of the NHS but we will be working so surgery can still go ahead. I would have expected a global email by now with details which hasn't arrived yet so I expect that your community provider is in the same situation.

I wonder how many of these companies that have been offering sympathy on every social media platform known to man (self publicising!) will all of a sudden decide not to allow the bank holiday...

Just had an email from HR confirming next Monday is to be treated like any other Bank holiday - offices closed - only essential operations/call-outs to remain on-line - just like Sundays.

Only if they've run out of bread. And even then, only if you let them.

For the majority of the country with contracts that say "33 days annual leave including public holidays" or words to that effect it's effectively unpaid too. I've already booked my holiday for the year so if the office is closed it's unpaid.

I can't see many FacelessCorp Plc.'s just giving an ad-hock paid day off to all staff.

Didn't most faceless corps already give an extra paid couple of days for the diamond jubilee only a couple of months ago? I don't recall it creating massive acramony. I'd say the state are in quite a bit of credit after the furlough arrangements and business loans to get another one through without too much hand wringing.

It’ll be used as an excuse by the Government as to why the economy is tanking, another days output lost, no shops or anywhere open to spend your money, just sitting in collective misery because…

I work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays but the Monday market I sell at is cancelled, so another day’s income lost.

Don't know where you work but everywhere I've worked that has "X days holiday inc bank holidays" means subtract 8 from the total and that's your bookable allowance. If you have to book bank holidays off yourself then that's not how it normally work for the majority of businesses who close on a bank holiday.

Was only one extra day, one was moved to fit.

Every contract I’ve ever had is xx days leave, plus bank/public holidays.

That's what I mean, just because Charlie proclaimed a bank holiday, doesn't mean we get an extra one in our allowance, it just moves from an effective 25+8 days to 24+9. Except I've already used 20 days and have to take 5 days off in December when the office closes for Jesus's birthday.

So your employer did that to you for the diamond jubilee? I'd say that's unusual.

Having said that I'm expected to work it too.

My wife is currently helping a very small SME turn into a slightly bigger SME. Her last gig was in the care sector. For obvious reasons the care sector has roles that can't have bank holidays off by default so company wide you got 29 days leave a year and booked them went you wanted/could. So in an office based role if you wanted to work the May bank holiday and have the following Monday off when the crowds were less of an issue you could. She's putting the same system into the SME and it's proving very popular.

We've been given the day off and the weather forecast is looking reasonable so I'll be out on the bike or paddle board. My daughter tells me she's off to London that day with her mother. I can't see the attraction in it personally. All those people...

Pretty sure that's how mine is worded, although can't seem to find a copy...

I assume my appointment at the hospital ortho department will be postponed.

Back to Google to figure out how to treat myself in the meantime.

I work for a medium sized civil engineering firm - office and sites shut (full pay) 'as a mark of respect'

But I do have a good employer and its an attitude like that which means pretty much everyone who works here are long-termers

I'll probably watch some of it - not feeling the need avoid it for a political badge of honor

Funny how the same politicians who bleat about strikes are happy to lose a day's production with a Bh.

Employer hasn't decided yet if it'll be paid Bank Holiday, open and working as normal, or mandatory use of annual leave allowance! I don't think the last option will go down well...

My Big American Faceless Corp (TM) is giving us the day off.

I'm going to have a lie in (after staying up late to watch the NFL guilt free), a fry up and then take the dog out for a nice long walk.

Small business owner here (18 staff) and it didn't occur to me that I would do anything other than honour the holiday. Staff goodwill is worth much more to me than trying to find a way to minimise the impact.

Americans love the royal family. My place is shutting the offices, but I think the operations and warehousing are open as usual

Americans love the royal family.

I heard an anecdote where an American boss sent his UK minions a condolence email saying how great Elizabeth was and how fabulous her defeat of the Armada.

Not sure how true it is. Gotta love lazy people and Wikipedia though

Civil Service is having the day off to pay our respects to The Boss.

Need to check the actual timing of the service out of politeness, and see if any local cafes that I ride to have done the same....

I’m planning to be up a mountain. A potential good day to do Snowdon ?

Just of the phone with a colleague who is a staunch republication he was going to go into work as he felt hypocritical taking the day off. Convinced him that spending a nice day off riding his bike away from the media coverage on Liz, was a much better thing to do.

Will head round a friends with the family on Sunday for a party as its been impossible to plan for a year or so due to at least one person already being busy. The free mandatory day off at short notice means everyone is free, then booked golf for the Monday within seconds of the BH being announced

I'm liking that idea, but alas it's September and hence banned during the day.

Though it is fun to imagine the apoplectic rage of the red sox to you doubly desecrating the day.

This place will obviously be the contrary outlier, but it will be very interesting to see what percentage of the UK actually use the BH for watching it and generally being a bit sad face.

On a positive side, there'll be another one next year for the coronation.

Secondly, how are you going to spend the day?

Would a ride down Heartbreak Ridge be appropriate?

Been told I won't get a day credited to me.

My feelings towards the royal family are ambivalent. I think it's a bit excessive to give everyone a day off, especially those who will use the time to do something other than watch the funeral.

My employer not announced it yet, but as I'm having a day out cycling on Saturday, I'll have to do what the missus wants on Monday. It's a fair compromise.

Yup, mine as well. We've had two emails from high ups in the US sending their condolences.

I'm managing to avoid the bank holiday and the funeral by being in the office in the US. I'm dreading travelling through London to the airport on Saturday.

Self employed so I'll be working. Unless my customers would rather me not be there (mostly domestic jobs at the moment) which is fair enough then I'll mince about on the bike instead.

I booked uplift at BPW as soon as it was confirmed that Monday was going to be a BH.
Going to watch all the history taking place on catchup, with a pint and lots of aches and pains.
Gave all our team an extra day off. Told them not to bank on the same for the coronation!

Self employed. Part of operation Lion, my part is providing power for the broadcast, all of it. just finished a 15 hour day, won’t get much sleep running up to it, and none during.

I will be fairly stressed on the 19th
