booo

My new (to me) mondeo is making a metallic squeal on starting and also vibrating at 1.5k revs.

2L 130 bhp tdci on a 53 plate and 80k miles

DMF? I think so 🙁

You're having no luck with cars at all are you!

Does it start or does the motor fail to engage and squeal/squak? Does it vibrate at cold or when warm too?

Parts for a dmf with clutch (only about an extra £80 so worth doing at the same time) are about £350 plus fitting.

Could be - my focus has apparently got a problem too - my local garage said c. 800 quid with ford parts or a few hundred less with 3rd party parts. Fortunately mine's not causing that much trouble yet so it doesn't need doing immediately.

Should've said prices will vary a fair bit. The official way to do it involves splitting the gearbox and taking it off completely, it's quite possible (tho a bit awkward) to do it with the box saving a lot of labour time if they know how.

I read in a mechanic's trade rag recently (look, I was bored all right?) that Valeo now supposedly make a replacement normal clutch which has similar characteristics to a DMF but costs a lot less.

Doesn't sound great, the starter noise is the biggest sign normally as it is the material of the dmf disentigrating and blocking the connection. It would normally be worse when cold though.

Do you have a friendly/local/regular garage?

Didn't get mine done but got a quote from my local garage (who I've used for years) of about £500-600.

I suspect hot fiat might be talking about a solid flywheel to replace the dmf. I wouldn't go down this route as there have been instances of cranks snapping due to the increased vibration.

Mine's been arseing about through the last 2 winters - only really a problem on startup though, no noticable vibration. It's fine during the summer, then starts mucking about again when it gets cold.

I don't have a picture of a piece of string 🙂 The problem is that if it is on it's way the extra vibration isn't great for other bits of the engine.

My local garage here in shef is capel motors 0114 2854449. Tell Mike I sent you and ask him for a price. He's sound and won't rip you off.

Its this kind of thread that makes me want a dit bike rather than a car.

They may eat piston rings every 50 hours,

Need the oil changeing every other ride,

Cost more in chains, sporckets and tires than fuel.

But at least its all dirt cheep and DIY!

Yikes. My quote was just for dmf thinking about it so saves a bit, no starter, slave etc.

Time for a ring round a few places it seems!

Private sale I assume? Even with this if you asked about faults and they said none you still have some case. Might be worth calling them?

Yikes indeed - do you really need all that lot? Mine was for DMF + clutch, but it's probably a bit of a stretch for you to make the trip down to Yateley MOT.

Take the starter off and check for metallic dust.

Squeals could be squeaky belts?

It should always be cheaper to get the garage to get the parts as they'll get trade discounts off the list price that you won't if you just walk in as a random.

not a squeal as such more of a metallic noise if that makes sense. Its the vibration that (imo) is the death knell

Don't keep it too long.

I - until last Friday - had a 52 plate TDCi LX like yours (albeit with 145k on the clock). I had DMF probs, wheel bearings wearing out, then endless problems with back brakes etc...

Basically, despite being an excellent car to drive, it got to the stage this year where I was paying out more on parts than the value of the car. Sad to see it go but glad I've got a newer car that isn't going to surprise me with something else wearing out every other month.

Have you picked it up yet rob? Isn't mike great. His default position does seem to be playing solitaire while smoking a fag in his office tho 🙂

+1

Spent over a grand on turbo, then rear sus, then injector problems over a period of 6 weeks - got shut of it pronto after that...
