if human life evolved out of Africa, then everything is of black origin
which kind of makes the whole MOBO thing pointless really. ๐
i think it largely is pointless nowadays anyhow. i could see the point of it originally when black artists struggled to gain industry recognition or proportianate media coverage but i'm not convinced that that is still the case.
*happy to be proved wrong*
One of our artists won something. In my view, that makes it a ****ing brilliant awards ceremony ๐
aren't most forms of modern music in some way influenced by black music? I mean all forms of rock have their roots in blues. Also jazz etc has influenced both hip hop and other forms of music that require sampling. there literally is no music of white origin out there except posibly opera and modern forms of classical music like the proms. I'm pretty sure they have there own forum to present themselves. basically its a none argument.
Is having a special forum for mountain bikers discriminating against people who aren't mountain bikers?
I expect that jazz and blues have also been influenced by classical and folk music to some extent.
But I find all awards ceremonies rather iratating, its just a rather self obsessed industry's need to pat itself on the back, and they will create as many classifications as they can to do so.
I wonder if Kraftwerk have ever been nominated...
Kraftwerk - legends, and into bikes in a big way. Have you heard the one about Ralf Hutter coming a cropper in a big way on a road bike in about 1983, and his first question on coming round (days later, in hospital) was "Wo ist mein Fahrrad?"

Slightly baffled
Right. I'll offer an explanation:
The West, IE Europe and North America, is inherently and institutionally 'White', by culture and ethnicity. Black people within the West are in a minority. The principal Social Actors are White Males. The default setting, if you like, is 'White'. Thus, society has revolved around the needs and wants of this particular group, for centuries. Any other influences are often seen as foreign and alien to the status quo, and often treated with mistrust, suspicion and even hate.
The point of having a MOBO ceremony, is to say that 'look, (we) Black people are a legitimate and valid part of Western Society, and would like aspects of Black culture to be celebrated and respected in the same way that White culture is'. Because there was much valid opinion that Black culture wasn't previously recognised and given the respect it rightly deserved. White artists took the credit for music that Black people had written, created and first performed. I think it was just a way of saying 'hang on, it's fine for White artists to have the recognition and rewards for their efforts, but we don't think we're getting a fair deal'. Which was true, and a sentiment backed up by huge numbers of White artists too.
Notting Hill Carnival is a celebration of Black culture in London and the UK. It has aways been a 'Black' event; it was founded by Black people, with African and Caribbean music and dance. It has evolved into a celebration of the wonderful diversity of life in London, and no-one is excluded!
I can see your point, that 'White' isn't a term that's used in relation to European and British culture and history, but if you see such things as the Monarchy being a 'White' institution, then maybe it starts to become a bit clearer.
In fairness, I used to wonder in the same way as Spongebob. But following my time studying at Uni, and growing up more, I came to understand why there is a MOBO, yet not a MOWO, in Britain.
I hope this sheds some light on the matter.
I think Spongebob is perfectly right to ask such a question. And to accuse him of being racist is unfair and unhelpful.
Maybe one day there won't be a need for the MOBO awards, as the music and culture of all groups will be celebrated equally. I think that day has yet to come.

I don't think that's quite right. Black music is celebrated - undoubtedly. IIRC, the whole point of MOBO is that black music is celebrated but not duly recognised.
thank you elfin.
I, personally celebrate music from all origins equally.
If I like em.
See those three tower blocks in the background? I grew up in the middle one of them.
I'm possibly in that crowd somewhere actually. I can't remember. I was only little.

Was blues not influenced from folk music then? Folk music with Scottish/Irish/English/German/Spanish etc influences from early US settlers?
I'm glad someone stood up for Laibach up there. It's fairly obvious that they are one of the biggest piss taking bands on the planet.

Have you grown since the last time I saw you ?
How tall are you now ?
About 95% of what passes for racism these days is actually nothing of the sort, or is totally harmless fun.
it's political correctness gone mad. and it's actually 96.7%, i read it in the express.
