Bing is shite
Don't use Bing then ! 🙄
You are looking at the same phone in different sizes. What size works for you - fits in your pocket/gives you a big enough screen ?
I've got Gmail set up on two windows phones. What problems do you have with it?

As I understand it the S4 and S4 mini are far from being the same phone in different screen sizes. Go S4 out of the 2.
I've found the waterproof-ness of the Sony Xperias is good for biking use
Maybe have a play on the S4 before committing. I had one and absolutely hated it.
I have an s4 mini and its fine, 2 year old model, and samsung are not great at releasing updates for old models. That said its a solid enough performer, probably a bit underpowered for proper gaming but ive used it with google cardboard ok, in hindsight i shouldve got the full size one, at the time it seemed a bit big, but compared to my work iphone 6s is pretty compact. One limitation of the mini is it doesnt support usb otg, but you may not care. I'm not a fan of samsungs preloaded apps generally, but you can noble most of them.

^^^this^^^ I had an S4 and hated mine as well. The Samsung touchwiz interface is appalling, it has loads of bloatware you can't uninstall and the battery life is terrible - I ended up buying a bulky case with a battery in it just to make it though the day.
I've now got a Sony Xperia - the battery lasts a day and a half of heavy use with ease, it is waterproof and Sony's version of Android is a lot less intrusive.
Recommended.
Google Nexus 4 or 5 or Moto G
Plain unmessed with Android. Works for all in my Family.
Edit: just re-read the original post can't buy outright. So Moto G 3rd gen @£5.68
My boss runs a windows phone at work, she uses gmail and google, it syncs with works (windows based) cloud remote desktop beautifully, and looks due a Windows10 upgrade shortly on the phone. I was tempted to order for the staff that were due new machines. I really liked them. Is the issue BPAC?
But, all our staff are used to Android now, and so having had a few MotoG (2nd Gen) for 6 months with no issues and reasonable battery life, I went back down that route with MotoG(3rd gen) - bigger battery, better camera and about to get next Android before Christmas, without faffy bloatware. What is not to like? That and they cost £160...
I'm very happy with my Huawei Honor 6. Octacore, 4G, etc.
S4 mini is definitely *not* the same as S4. Lower spec.
Not the S4mini, maybe the S4. But when you can get the Moto G 3rd gen for less (and new) ... [url= https://www.gi f" target="_blank">https://www.gi f"/> fgaff.com/motorola/motorola-g-3/phone-details[/url]
My Lumia is running all the decent apps I had on my old Android that crapped out. The only ones I couldn't get have decent replacements and the rest I had on Android were largely useless as I never used them.
Gmail works fine and email in general should be no issue. It's just IMAP/POP etc.
Biggest thing for me is battery life of the Lumia range is awesome. Gone from half a day with a Samsung to 2.5 days with a Lumia 640 even with everything turned on, loads of background apps, fair amount of usage during the day. Android is not efficient and never was. It's also terrible at dealing with sleep states in apps. There's no control over apps that don't behave and even Google's own apps I found got updates that kill the battery. Manufacturers just chuck bigger batteries at them to cope, and with ever increasing pocket unfriendly phone sizes they have the space for them.
Data usage is also impressive. Exact same background apps that I had on my old Samsung, and over a month the Samsung would take nearly 1GB of data without me downloading big things, watching videos. Same usage on the Lumia and it's around 250mb for a month. Same content. I've even been able to install the Facebook app on the Lumia and yet on the Samsung I had to uninstall it as it was consuming vast amounts of data. Yet on both I get to see all the same posts, pictures and videos and get all the notifications. Go figure.
