I have a golf that was only supplied with one key. Whats the best way of going about getting an extra one sorted?

Any decent automotive locksmith will do it, and it'll be less expensive than going to the main dealer. If you are in Southampton I can recommend an excellent local chap but every city will have someone similar.

Don't expect it to be cheap though - as well as cutting the metal mechanical part of the key you'll need to have the transponder programmed to the ecu, and the central locking synchronised. All this requires specialist equipment and is therefore expensive.

I've recently bought a 2008 Passat and I'm in the same position. A bit of research on the VW forums suggests that the only reliable way to get the transponder coded is through a VW dealership.

I was quoted about £85 for the key and £160 to code it to the car. £245 all in. But you need the V5 to prove ownership.

I bought a Passat key from an independent VW specialist garage. It was still over £200 though.

Get a second hand key, a new blank blade, and uncoded transponder from eBay.

The hard bit is getting the old transponder out of the original key (isopropyl, cotton buds and patience!)

You'll have to get the key blade cut at an automotive place, but that's a lot cheaper than getting it made there.

You can code the new key yourself once it has a blank transponder open the car and start it with your existing key, open the window, put the key in the drivers door lock and unlock it. Or something like that - full instructions are about on various VW forums

@jambalaya - I've sent you the number.

@burko73 - You haven't got an email address in your profile so I can't contact you. I don't want to put the guys number on here as the spambots will pick it up and he'll get spammed to death! Let me know your email and I'll send you the details.

I had one cut by a mobile chap in Huddersfield for my Skoda and it cost £80. He even put me a VRS logo on the fob instead of the usual skoda one. Cost from a dealer was about £200.
