Heard something on the radio this morning that as from today when you opened IE you were going to get a message informing you that there were other net browsers available such as Firefox etc and even links to them. Tried it and surprise surprise nothing. Slightly unrelatedly, I mainly use Firefox but recently when I Google something and then click on the link on the search result I want, a totally different site appears, usually one of these annoying confused.com type sites. This started happening a few months ago on IE, hence the switch to Firefox, is this virus related as I regularly run virus checks and have been getting a few ADWARE finds which although it says they are not usually malicious, I delete to be on the safe side. Any thoughts on what is going on? p.s none of this searching is dodgy.
What's it about? Opera going whining to the EU about how no-one wants to use their browser.
Firefox (and more recently Chrome) have been competing quite happily against IE, and gaining plenty of marketshare, without any intervention at all.
It's about preventing Microsoft from mandating use of IE on new installs in Europe
I think Opera were perfectly reasonable in doing it actually. Windows were quite clearly using their market position to give them an advantage by having their browswer as a default knowing that most people would never change it.
Still I wonder how Apple have got round the same thing. I guess it's because no one cares about the fashionistas getting manipulated since they evidently like being told what to do 😉
(that should get the sensitive souls going...)

This is more to the point. I'm not sure it's even possible to uninstall IE from the operating system, which is annoying, but doesn't stop me from using Firefox.

Handbags at the ready.... 3.... 2.... 1..... GGGOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
It only applies to new PC's/instalations, at the moment you can't delete IE, its permenantly there as part of windows (as windows needs IE to update itself).
Always seemed daft as surely MS doesnt make any money from IE which it gives away free anyway.

how much would you pay for it ??
Thanks for all the politics and Gates baiting, so I still need to solve my Googling problem, anyone? Also if I have to get yet another browser, which is the best?
Install spybot and run a full scan - that should sort out the searching thing.
The browsers all work in one way or another. Try and find which one works best for you - it's a bit like asking what's the best bike...
It's one of those terribly clever ideas from those lovely people in Brussels who decided that MS needed to be cut down to size and have subsequently chased them on a number of increasingly stupid ideas. There were versions of Windows without IE (as per EU requirement) of which precisely none were sold. MS volunteered to provide a browser chooser (what you are now talking about) but that didn't satisfy Opera either as apparently they were paranoid that because O comes lower down the alphabet Opera would never be chosen over IE or Chrome. Given that a significant number of consumers who use Windows don't even know what version of Windows they are using let alone what browser they are using I don't really see that this is going to make much difference other than a number of users will randomly pick something that flashes in front of them without having the faintest idea what they are doing or choosing. Apparently the EU thinks this is a good thing which will quite possibly open up more security issues on home PCs as those users who choose something other than IE will not necessarily know enough to go out and get security updqates for their carefully chosen browser.
Not sure I understand the logic of why Opera were reasonable? There was a flurry of their users who abandoned the product because they thought Opera were being total numbnuts in their approach. Sour grapes from a company that clearly don't make a good enough product. But rather than compete and make their product better they go whining to the EU.

You don't have to get another browser. If you are happy with it stick with IE. As mentioned above why not try a malware scan. If necessary use more than one. MS offers a free one, Defender, which you could try.
message won't show if you already have an alternate browser installed.
top 5 alternative browsers will be displayed in a random order (IE, FF, chrome, opera and safari, iirc), another list of 7 will also be accessible, which will also be in a random order.
