I use my DSLR (Sony A series) for the odd bit of movie making, the sound is never that good. Apparently getting an external mic is the way forward. The sony one is £135 is there any cheaper ones that fit a Sony camera?
Any advice on this would be great.
Thanks

I use, and would recommend, either a Røde Videomic, or Røde Stereo Videomic. Both cheaper and both likely to be considerably better.

+1 for Rode, I have the Stereo Videomic, I which I'd bought the smaller Mono mic, but it's very good. Massive upgrade on the built in mic's.

but it’s the shitty preamps in the camera that are half the problem, evidently you can get an in-line one that’s quite small and does a good job (was told about them today as we have another moving image shoot) but you are much better off with an external recorder like a zoom h4n that gives phantom power to a decent mic.

What are you trying to film?

Attaching the microphone to the camera will never sound great if you have 20ft of windy hillside between you and the gnats fart you are trying to record.

As above seperate recorder and a clapper board thingumy to synchronise.

Yeah stick a wee zoom H1 or similar recorder on top or at the end of a stick.

I have a zoon h4n and the sony pcm10, the sony is the better device, more consistent, longer battery, better mic pre-amps.
