Has anyone got one, specifically looking at a C220d Sport Estate. I've got a test drive booked for Friday but just doing my research. I'm also looking at the new 5 series BMW but its a bit more expensive (and a saloon).
It would be used for mostly munching up the motorway miles. Both would be purchased new.
I had a W205 C class C220 for a couple of years.
I thought it was very capable car and a nice place to be. Fuel economy was very good too. Mine was specced up quite well, so it had the sunroof, Burmiester stereo, bigger wheels etc. I read that the standard stereo isn't great but the Burmiester one is expensive and not exceptional. Speaker covers are pretty though. Very cheap insurance (for me) and cheap to tax.
I've got a noisy petrol C class now and its very good indeed.
mate has one. really nice car from what i can see. his fs goes in the back one wheel off. he really rates all the active safety stuff. reckons it's helped a few times. he played two dealers off for a pcp deal iirc.
I have a 2012 220d. Very easy to drive and comfortable. Enough oomph for overtaking but nowhere near a BMW 530d. Plenty of space to carry a bike or 2 with seats down and front wheels off. Get about 50mpg on a 35 mile commute on mainly country roads. Without much love and attention it has worn its 65 000+ miles well.
I've driven quite a few, much better than the old C class 4 cylinder and a lighter more comfortable car which gives good fuel returns, If you can stretch it go for the 250d as it has better torque.
I've had a C350 estate for just under 4 yrs now, best car I've ever owned by far, powerful, ultra reliable, smooth and take it easy and you can get 40+ to the gallon. shame to see it go in 15 days. Still my new AMG C43 Wagon has just arrived at the dealership after a massive 5 month wait !!! I can't wait to burn some proper fuel again.
Not owned, but recently driven a couple of C220's, a 5 Series and a 4 Series BMW, and I'll take the Mercs every time!
Lovely cars to drive, comfy, quick, capable handling, proper mile-munchers. Beemers are ok, but there's nothing about them that excites me in any way.
The bloke I picked up the BMW 418 M series from actually hated it, what with the low-profile run-flats and sports suspension it was a harsh, crashy ride, he was getting a C-250 as a replacement.
I couldn't argue with his choice, the Beemer was everything he said, and horribly noisy too, I felt like I needed earplugs driving it over normal road surfaces.
I hated mine. S205 2014 220d estate. The most uncomfortable seat I've ever had in a car, plastic reinforcement in the bolsters dug into my hips. Steering wheel not central to the drivers seat. Satnav that didn't recognise motorway islands as roundabouts, and always told you to keep left. Noisy engine. Way too small for a family, my lad in his car seat easily able to kick the front seats. Couldn't wait to get shot of the thing.
Oh, and if you've got feet bigger than size 11, you won't be able to fit your left foot on the footrest in an auto if you have the Burmester stereo, because one of the speakers is above it.
I used to have a 3 Tourer which was C class sized. It was great, though small for family stuff, kids and bags (bikes on roof). I then had a 5 Tourer for 4 years which I have just replaced last month with an A6 Avant. The BMW was heads in front of the competition 4 years ago and the only reason I bought the Audi was that I couldn't get a new model 5 Tourer on the road beginning of March.
There is a huge difference between Merc 200/BMW3/Audi A4 and Merc 300/BMW5/Audi A6....
I've got the c220d Estate sport as a company car on a 16 plate. There's not much you can say other than it does what it says on the tin. It's quick, comfy and pretty quiet. The only bugbear with it is the left footrest is too small, it's a big silver box with no character (my last car was a golf gtd - bags of fun and character) and there is no right foot rest which on long trips is missed.
Other than that its a good car.
I miss my golf.
I had a c200 sport saloon hire car for a while, a brand new one last year.
Petrol, 2.0 turbo I think it was.
It was quick enough but the auto box was frustrating changing gears too soon or too late and the seats were too hard for my liking.
It had flapy paddle gear shift too, but i didn't get on with it, I had to resort to using it in sport mode and it being tail spin happy, and overly twitchy or what I usually did is leave it in eco mode for a more refined lethargic drive.
So it was a frustrating drive.
Also it had a poorly thought out infotainment console, the screen looked like an afterthought just stuck to the dash. I'd expect more from a car that costs that much tbh. The dashboard is a bit plastic looking too, but the LED mood lighting is quite cute.
Was quick and handled pretty well though. Once the auto box realised you wanted to 'make progress'.
So I'd definitely give it a good test drive or 3 before committing.
It just doesn't quite come together. Not for me anyway.
Ive a 2012 version of what you're looking at. Done 90,000 miles in it since new and it's great. Defo get the auto box though - makes it so easy to drive. I'll usually see 57mpg on a 2 hour motorway journey.
Completely split then 🙂 started off well enough.
At least it gives me a few things to concentrate on when taking it for the test drive . I'm coming from an Octavia which I love apart from the harsh ride and noisy cabin.
I really want to like the 3 series BMW as that would suit my needs better but I just find the interior so bland I'm not even interested in taking it for a drive which means the 5 is the only option, although purely on looks its a hell of an option to have! Salesman said I can have the 5 for the day to give it a proper test.
Have you considered a Volvo?
They're boxy, but they're good.
I have a w206 220 Sport estate with the plus options.
Bought 2nd hand from MB at 8 months old.
I like it, it's easy to drive (sometimes too many switches, options, buttons), I'm getting average 53mpg based on fill up not the on board. Driving along the peage on Sunday the onboard was reading 62mpg (at 130kmh).
I've done quite a lot of going to Bath and back from London in the last few months and it's great on motorways and also on twisty more interesting roads.
The sat navy has some quirks - turn left entering a roundabout to end up going right.
The boot is a bit narrower than I'd hoped for our mk2 Focus could get 2 bikes in wheels off with the load cover over - it doesn't seem possible in the C.
Just bought a C250 AMG estate. Loving it. Almost too much 😀 Brilliant performance tied to relatively exceptional efficiency. Bought it for the same price as the same aged Fiesta my sister bought!

I'd recommend test drive anyway, you might end up hating it for more concrete reasons 🙂
BMW interiors are not very flashy and yet there is bit of tradition on how the buttons and controls are laid out and some functions are thought bit differently from others. What I don't like in mine are that sport seats with manual adjust are to be set once where as I like adjust them quite often during long drives and stock audio system is quite weak for car this expensive.
Had Volvos for years, then a Merc - seats in Volvos were better - I would get a long test drive in one to compare the cabin space...
I probably would have got a C350e estate if I could have got one on our company car scheme at work - but just outside my allowance.
Looked at the diesel options and they have a bigger engine than equivalent opposition but it's a little bit rough.
BMW 320d tourer was another option - but for me it would have ended up with not the best spec for my budget.
Audi A4 underwhelmed me and with rwd as all the other car options I quickly dismissed the Audi.
Actually went with a far less practical option - Jaguar XE saloon (no estate version made). Drives better than the Audi and the Merc. Not too far off the 3 series m sport in handling, but rides a lot better. Also more standard kit included.
Also when you go to business events the car parks are stacked with merc / Audi / BMW so it's nice to stand out a bit.
I've got the 163ps diesel auto in r sport spec. Love it.
16 plate C220d Sport here - company car, standard spec with no additions.
Actually wanted a 3-Series touring but was told that they couldn't get one within my allowance.....
I've never really understand why they give you both touch pad and scroll wheel interface for the infotainment system - seems like overkill, And the "picture frame" bolted to the dash does look a little out of place.
I can fit two bikes in the back (with front wheel off) one nice touch is the buttons that drop the rear seats are mounted on the boot sill so you don't have to open the rear passenger doors.
Other than that the drive is fine and the car looks nice (when clean...)
I'm sure i read somewhere that the C-Class is being given a face-lift soon?
I'd go for the 3-series to be honest.
I've got a C180 Sport estate and had it for just over 5 years (5k on the clock as a demonstrator when I bought it) It is the best car I have owned by far. Done 110k now and the 7 speed auto box is a dream, I absolutely love it.
I tend to keep my cars for around 5 years then replace with new or nearly new. I looked at a 3 series estate recently and not a criticism as I understand they are great but I could not see any reason to go into debt to close to £30k for a car that just about matches the one I have. Mine is still mint 5 years on and still a pleasure to drive. Have another in a hearbeat.
My Dad is on his second C class, 220d estate. I like it, nice car to drive, good spec, looks good too
I have an E class estate (2011) which is actually pretty good. I originally wanted another 5 series but I couldn't find one in the spec/price I wanted and the E class is much bigger with a 7 seat option too. I find I drive it more slowly than the 5 series..
Personally, I prefer the 3 series to the C class. I prefer BMWs in general, they feel less like an old man car, but I've been impressed with the more recent Mercs
😥they feel less like an old man car,
Unfortunately it's true, apart from the coupes maybe, and anything AMG or G wagon!
I can say that in an unbiased way as I also have a Merc, which has now made me an old man.
Sworn by them for years, had C220 and C250 estates. Got an E300 hybrid estate a year ago, like it but its a lump of a thing. Pros do outweigh the cons. Cons mainly being the container ship size of it for parking. It does fit bikes wheels on in the back, seats down with room for large dog and luggage stuff though.
Looking for a reasonably priced C63 estate but not in a rush, waiting for the right one.
Thanks for all the updates. I looked at the Jag XE too but doesn't really do it for me. Yes it could be a great drive, much like the 3 series, but if I don't like the look of a car then I don't really see the point to a test drive as I'll never really connect with it. Probably sounds a bit weird but I spend around 2-3 hours a day driving (on a good day) so I at least want to like the interior 👿
You've got to like the look of the car for sure - I'd never buy a car I don't like the look of. The Merc and the BMW 3er touring are both pretty nice looking cars in amg line / Msport spec so I wouldn't have been disappointed with either if I could have got a good spec.
Jag just had more stuff on it for the money - being able to start the car remotely from my phone so it de-ices itself whilst you are getting ready to go to work in the house is a proper winner in the winter.
We had a sit in a couple of years old one and were really put off by the centre console with those big, daft, round vents and cheap looking shiny plastics. Interior finish seemed well below BMW or Audi quality.
Volvo? Boxy you say? Had this about 2 weeks and bloody love it, the driver aids are witchcraft,
the cabin is a joy (if you don't have kids, get the blond leather it's gorgeous) and it's just a nice place to be!
(mind you, dealers are offering crazy discounts on A6 at the moment, as there's a new one due later this year. £5800 dealer contribution was practically the first thing out of the fella's mouth when we walked in)
I had a W205 Merc C250 Estate as a company car. When I left the job we liked the car so much we bought it from the lease company and my wife still runs it. The engine is a bit of a rough old thing but it pulls like a train and is s almost as strong as a 3.0 litre six cylinder diesel. I still enjoy driving it. When looking for a replacement I test drove a Merc E250 estate which was horrible, noisy with a very unrefined ride. Next was a BMW 520d touring which blew the Merc away in terms of handling comfort and refinement but the engine needed to be maxed out to "make progress" and it was a bit bigger than we really needed. Ended up with a BMW 330d xdrive touring. The standard seats and radio are crap and its not as quiet inside as a 5 series but my god its fast.
get the E class, ok ok.. its a taxi car.. but air suspension very subtle quiet ride, engine is quiet even for a diesel it made me hate my 320. however infotainment and relevant to my need data displays is very very poor.

Is that the new V90?
Really do like the look of that! I wonder if they'll bring a hybrid version out in time for my next company car change!
I have been considering a C class estate but reading today about the hormonal changes driving a merc seems to cause, I think I'd better pass. I don't have any pistols either.
Test drive Merc, BMW and Audi then choose. I have a strong preference having done the same (admitedly in 2006)
^^^^ yep, I actually prefer my A6 Avant with auto than the manual 520 it replaced. I only came to that conclusion today, after about 2.5k miles in it since beginning of March.
V90, yep. There's a plugin hybrid T8 due at some point I think. But they market it as the top performance model, not sure how that'll work on company scheme.
Much more realxing drive than the Germans, with all the sporting pretentions they're like driving a death star, while the Volvo is more like driving a piece of interior design.
That's why I like volvos, I like the look of the interior better, but that's a personal thing I guess and really good seats, and they don't seem to have been suckered into the trend of overly hard seats and bumpy suspension to make the ride feel more 'sporty'.
