We will be in touch
Sorry for essentially re-posting this question, but I am hoping for opinions.
Would a 2000 to 2001 vintage be any good as a city commuter? Does anyone here know anything of their reputation?
We looked at one a few years ago and wasn't that impressed. Build quality and reliability aren't anything special compared to other cars.
Audi A2's are very under rated and very well built even for an Audi.
AVOID
The dash made of cardboard and very cheap plastics, awful main dealers, unreliable electrics, wheel bearings, ABS, AC packing up, worst car we ever owned
Don't do it!
We had one for years doing a commute that killed a fiat punto in 60,000 miles from new. The Merc had 40,000 on it when we got it on a '52 plate and we sold it with 140,000 on the clock last year. So, 80,000 miles more than the Punto then....
Steering bushes wee worn and the job was too dear to bother keeping it.
While we had it it
Never let us down,
Never broke down
Took us to France 3 times because the space inside was bigger than my Mondeo, with 2 of the back seats removed anyway..
Was a bit thirstier than we would have liked but not by that much
Dearer to service then we would have likes but not by that much
Plastics in the cabin were worse than we would have likes but durable all the same
Smaller than you'd expect,
Larger inside than you'd expect
Fairly comfortable but ride slightly harsh ( to stop them rolling over if you swerved an elk)
Cracks along well when would up
Sits at 85 happily
We had the 1.4 petrol that was originally owned by easy car, car rental group from easy jet.
They are tiny when you stand next to one but massive inside.
As long as you get one that has been fully serviced, I'd say you'd be happy with it.
We liked ours and have no regrets owning it.
avoid, dreadful reputation , somebody might say they had a good experience, if so ask them to buy you some lottery tickets.
Hi autos have bad rep on Merc forums. Most people on Merc forums (pretty pro Merc biased) don't rate the Mk1 too highly.
