We've long kicked around the idea of owing a dog but work hours just were right when it came to leaving a dog alone for so long.
Now my little business has moved such that I have a 5 minute commute, on foot, and there's a yard out the back where a dog can run around, the idea had raised it's head a bit, though not to a serious level. Not, that is until we went out for a quiet pint on Saturday, only to be besieged by a good mate of mine who insisted we had to see this puppy - he wanted it but his Mrs put her foot down (they have a springer and a border already).
He was adamant the pup in question really was a good one and (sob story..) he's an 'only child' as the litter was only 2 and his sister died...
Next thing I know it's Sunday and I'm missing the HTN test ride to go see a pup..
Bottom line - we pick him up next Friday, at which point he'll be 11 weeks old.. 😀

So, puppy in, burning desire to spend some cash on bike upgrade out..... 🙂

I'm so jealous...I'd love to be able to own a dog, but with a full-time job it's just not feasible. Ted looks awesome! 🙂

Border Terriers are ace dogs - not the most obedient dogs though!

This is ours - Angus - at about six months old...

Cheers all!
Mrs MM is over the moon, i knew she 'would not mind' owning a dog but, seems she would love to own a dog - she has not even met Ted yet, she's been on a course this w/end so I did the visit on my own, with 100% approval to say 'yes' if all worked out right...
She'll be unbearable when we're en-route to collect him on Friday...

Border Terriers are ace dogs - not the most obedient dogs though!

We're advised they're ok (when trained) unless / untill they see something they'd call 'food / fun!' - i.e rabbit, mouse, guinea pig... hamster - Time will tell!

I probably should have been clearer in my 'not-obedient' description!

Ours is pretty much as you say above - most of the time he will come back when called, but if he sees another dog (he just wants to play!) or anything else interesting then no amount of calling will get him back!!

He's perfect around the house though and doesn't chew/trash anything which a lot of Borders can.

He is a weeing, sniffing machine though - so you don't get the most relaxing walks!

No one mentioned their selective deafness as well.

They are great to run next/near (off at a tangent) to you while out riding but make sure you don't do it until they are fully grown (around 12 months)

[img] [/img]
They can fly as well

[img] [/img]
And love the water/sea.

Cracking pictures above!

Thats common to several breeds, my Staff is selectively deaf when it suits her, but I think she's learnt that from my son (!) as when we got her 2 1/2 years ago she was great at responding & recall, and she's gone off in that time, alongside my son who is 9 going on 14.

I currently prefer the dog to the child 👿

Archie is just over 2 now and is great, especially with the kids, they take up so much time but are great fun.

now looks like this

enjoy, they are great

One more thing marsdenman - stripping them is easy to do yourself, don't be conned by dog-grooming salons that charge a small fortune for it.

If you can pull a hair out, you can strip your border terrier!! It does take a little while to get them looking even all-over, but our dog loves it.

and watch your food. Sherlock is a thieving little sod when he can get away with it. He especially likes porridge and blueberries

here he is a little older skiing with the missus

muffin man - cheers, I had wondered about that.....

darrell - we're told Ted has a thing for scrambled egg... 😯
Still, so long as it's only an occasional treat, that does him no harm, and he does not start asking for smoked salmon on side, i guess it's fine 😉

I've just been advised that tomorrow evening we are looking to 'pup-proof' the house... that'll be fun..

Mate of mine had a couple of boarder terriers with selective hearing. He used to take a shovel with him on long walks, one of those little fold up jobs. Seems he had to dig them out of rabbit holes a few times.

He looks like a right little bundle of fun. House isn't a home without a dog in it.

bgd - now, she is a cutie - has she got a BF, shall I pass Ted her details 😉

We're enjoying our last 24 hours of a pup-free place we collect Ted about 5.30 tomorrow night...
MrsMM will be unbearable tomorrow, doubtless she'll be like a kid at Christmas tonight...

Brilliant dogs.

We're going to start walking a Border on Saturday, it's owned is terminally ill and wants a good home for it. We've offered to take the dog so he needs to get to know us so going to start walking him. Could end up with him within weeks if he takes to us and the kids.

Cheers MM and good luck! Any time Ted's in the Plymouth area I'm sure she'd be up for meeting 😛 We lost our Rottweiller a while back and thought it would be difficult to fill the whole he left. How something so small and innocent looking can make life so hectic is beyond me.

Can't wait for two weeks time when she can start going out 😆

Plymouth area

mmm, long way to go for a bit of, ahem, doggie style.... 😉

another 2 weeks before she can go out though? - interesting - we've been told Ted really should have a week inside (had his booster yesterday) but, so long as we don't take him to anywhere frequented by lots of dogs - i.e. local peeing / pooing spots, he can go out... His current owner is a vet..!

Drac - hope it goes well, and fair play to you for looking to take the little creature on.

Ta Marsdenman I couldn't let the chance slip I'm a big Border fan and we lost our Lab back in October. It's the longest I've ever been without a dog, looking forward to walking him and hope it works out great company for me during the day when everyone else is out.

Don't know about your Borders, but our Angus watches loads of telly and goes mental when any sort of animal comes on!!! The top of the TV cabinet is scratched to buggery from when he leaps at the telly!

What a great thread!

I'm sitting on the sofa with two thirteen year old grey haired borders - Esme and Jezibel with lots of puppy memories. They have still been out for their hour walk this evening and have been running up the garden to bark at the moon! You puppy owners have many years of fun ahead of you.

MrsG is now talking about "project overlap".....another little bundle of border terrier fun.

Yep they are selectively deaf except where the word "biscuit" is used. Always useful for walks to have a couple in your pocket.

Class. Some typical border shots there, inquisitive, playful, soft as a baby and then kill kill kill.

Yep "kill kill". I know what you mean. Years ago I went fishing early one foggy morning with my borders. I heard a strange sound and Jez went off like a shot. Next thing loads of barking and lound mooing. I ran off into the fog to find her facing up a bullock about 6inches for it's nose. I still reckon if I hadn't grabbed her she would have went for the bullock. She was probably just eyeing up up for size!

Sounds about right Tony they don't see small things as worthy prey, they'll kill them but not worth the hassle. My Border only picked fights with big dogs Doberman and Rotweilers being his favourite sport. Small dogs wanting a fight were ignored and not even acknowledge a simple glance. He also loved to chase deer which as a real pain given the ground the can cover through thick forest and his reluctance to give up.

marsdenman- OT - do you know Jonathan traverse? (local to you)- buying a rear wheel off of him and wondering if you know of the wheel/any abuse etc or condition? Its a LONG shot as even if you know him you might not know the condition of each bit of his kit....

Mail in profile 😀

Evenin All...

Hora - sorry, don't know your man - truth is I only know one other biker around here, though I see a few, I really should get out more...

TwoHats - yep, small world - if you're around for the weekend I won't say bring the bike but drop us a line if you have time for a pint!

Drac - Jake looks like a top, lean, mean, ball (and deer and rabbit and.. and.. ) chasing machine.

Ted update - collected him Friday as planned and he's been great. Think the fact he's 11 weeks old and was an only pup has done wonders for him... Seems he's got a great temperament and is certainly brave - he's been out for several walks to introduce him to folk and dogs we know, including Max, a Rhodesian Ridgeback.Max is a top dog and gentle as a gentle thing - he was strolling slowly up to say Hi to Ted when Ted yet out a yelp - off shot Max!!
Piccies to follow... of Ted - not of Max doing a runner!

I'll be around for more than the weekend but as we're travelling quite a distance and I'll have kids in tow there's zero chance of bringing my bike!
You know that Ted rides too?
I might take you up on that offer of a pint though, especially if its in the Riverhead!
