Say I'm doing a journey of 250 miles & have the choice of 2 cars, one of which does 51mpg & the other does 47mpg, fuel is £1.15 a litre.
How much will I save on the journey by going in the car that does 51mpg?

Miles divided by miles per gallon tells you how many gallons each car needs.
Multiply that number for each car by 4.54 to get the number of litres required (convert from gallons).

Multiply litres by fuel cost will tell you cost per car...

Edit - fuel cost is unlikely to be the same for petrol and diesel...

Are you just testing to see if people read the question?

What he's saying is: work it out your ****ing self

I feel my input here was worthy.

That's too obvious isn't it?

£25.59 @ 51mpg

£27.77 @ 47mpg

So you will save £2.18. Ish. That's a pint of beer - in Yorkshire anyway.

(250 / 51 ) * 4.546 = 22.28 litres = £25.63
(250 / 47 ) * 4.546 = 24.18 litres = £27.81

Saving = £2.18

Use your bike.

Which one? One's got fatter tyres than the other two but maybe weighs a bit less. Plus it's a good ride to Norfolk for a week with the Mrs on the toptube. 😆

Serious question, I couldn't get my head round how to work it out!

Basically I could take the Mondeo doing around 51 mpg or the Xtrail doing around 47. The Mondeo's more comfy & nicer to drive but the Xtrail would be better for 'offroad' parking etc.

Years ago I was very indecisive but now I'm not so sure.

sell one car, profit, save insurance/tax etc, profit, no longer need to decide which one to drive, will need to determine an alternative way to save 2 pounds.

Actually just been talking about this to Mrs Egf.

(selling a car, not saving £2)

Having never owned a car, I cannot help wondering- why do people know their cars mpg usage, but the cost of the fuel in £/litre?

Most cars, well every one I've had, has a computer that gives a MPG reading in miles per gallon. Fuel is sold in litres. Some people don't know how how use a calculator.

In the olden days, fuel price was quoted in £/gallon, so it all made sense back then.

Thankfully, we're leaving the EU, so we can Make Units Great Again.

"foreigners" don't do mpg (or even km per litre) either. They have a strange system of litres per 100km, where lower is obviously better.

It'll all be so much better in 2019.

That number is one I remember too. Used to be a brewer. Brewed in barrels, declared and paid revenue in litres, sold in pints.

Newfangled car computers, my two last cars, 2000 and 2008, both had them. Are you driving an Austin Allegro?
