Thinking of turning half our small garden in to a playground for the kids / workout area for me. Ground is a lumpy, rooty mess. Anybody know of a good all weather material, that doesn’t cost the earth, that I can put down once I’ve levelled the ground? Something with decent grip that drains well would be preferred.
grass?
How about a play area approved bark mulch?
What's your take on doesn't cost the earth?
We had artificial grass laid over ayear ago. 7x4m area was £900 including all the labour and fittting. This included taking off the top layer of dead turf, levellings and sand laying and properly fixing around all the edges.
It's still looking very strong a year on and I can see it lasting a long time.

Kittens is a good shout, grass not so much. The screaming from the kittens might get annoying after a few days. Grass is only useful in the summer, dreadful for the rest of the year. I also live in Macclesfield where Summer is a theory and not an actual season.
Artificial grass might be a good shout. I’ll check out the bark mulch too.
We did a play area using bark mulch which is pretty squidgy so good for when they fall (we had swings, slide and climbing frame).
Kids are now >15 yo so no more 'playing' and the bark has been absorbed into the grass so nothing to get rid of. The artificial turf sounds good but will cost more and be less fall-friendly I would imagine.
For under the swing and trampoline, I went for rubber bark as it ticked all the boxes for us - easy to put down, doesn't rot or mulch like normal bark chippings, the local cats don't like to do their business near it and its safe for the kids to land on. It also seems to stay where you want it without blowing everywhere which is an added bonus.
I got ours from here: http://www.terrasofta.co.uk/rubber-play-mulch/ about 5-6 years ago and it still looks like new.
From memory it turned up in a dumpy bag and we just had to put down a liner and rake it into place. Job jobbed!
