Shirley, you'd be using the mandatory STW log burner?

Hardly off the grid to run an oil boiler

Its no big deal really

And when you read the description of the new house itll say oil central heating - if not the big green tank will give it away.

No towns or villages in UK are off grid (I think)- somewhere like Findhorn is mixed on and off grid, but still has some connections.

I know of a few houses and places off grid, and we have a center that is only on grid as we sell £00,000's of electricity back to the grid each year after they have used what they need...

There are 23.4 million households (latest census) and according to National Grid, they supply just over 20 million customers, so that implies roughly 3 million not on grid....

Most of the villages where i live in Gloucestershire are off mains gas network. even though we have high pressure systems running through the area plus a huge high pressure gas storage plant a few miles up the road.
Result, majority of oil or LPG.

Reducing stations are quite costly to build and maintain, and the gas quality has to be constantly monitored on it's export point from the national network. Sorry!

I'd say looking at a few houses in any town or village you're interested in and looking for gas central heating would be the easiest way. Network maps are kept pretty secure for good reason. Your local gas supplier will be listed in the phonebook and yellow pages and may be able to advise you in general terms, but don't call the emergency number! (0800 111999)

I heard that they're going to stop installing gas in new builds and go back to electric only due to network capacity :S

The Building Regulations (Part L ) is based on Gas as the benchmark for its target's (TER) Would have to be a complete re think for SAP & SBEM assessments

Have you had oil before or just speculating on cost . Its a bit more expensive but the places you get to live off mains make up for it
