"Pet owners in urban areas need to be as concerned as people walking dogs in more rural areas.
"We did a survey recently where we looked at tick abundance in parks in cities and we found about 30 per cent of parks had ticks.
"Particularly where there is woodland or areas of areas of long grass, there is a risk."

"Tick fell off a dog and put in the bag, where it lived for 6 wks. It laid eggs and the eggs hatched. This is why you should use flea and tick products on your pets, don't want that in your house!"

CHECK YOURSELF AND YOUR DOG FOR TICKS!!

In the spirit of trying to raise awareness, and to help other people who might be bitten by a tick, can I publicise the following to any health professionals on here:
RCGP Lyme Disease e-learning

It is FREE to ALL health professionals, and is worth 0.5 CPD credits. [I have no idea what that last bit means - hopefully it's good, and leads to untold riches, or free beer].

I've no idea what's in it [it's not accessible by the public], but its all official RCGP stuff - no conspiracy theories, etc

Average temps have been better and people are becoming more aware thanks to things such as social media.

You know the next tick I find is going in a bag now right.

I have removed quite a few from him this year. No harsh frosts means I'm getting the first one earlier in the year too.

CPD - Continuing Professional Development. The pro needs so many points over the cycle to maintain their knowledge and their certification. (Yes lots of moolah riding on it).

We got our pup in May and she had three ticks in three weeks. In June she had Bravecto, a table that lasts three months and no ticks since. It seems to work but was quite expensive at about £30.

My flattie is picking up 3-4 a day, but the golden retriever none. A bit odd!!!

Thing that surprises me:
Slide 4 - 4.2% of blood donors tested positive for borreliosis burgdorferi, and donated blood isn't screened, and it survives the storage conditions of donated blood.
[Plus how many false negatives?]

Thanks whimbrel for these informative posts.

I did not realise until after my dog had died that she'd had a tick that eventually swelled. Never heard of Lyme disease and ticks in those days. Our usual stomping ground was Swinley Forest.
