Never his biggest fan but, blimey, he grabbed his opportunity with both hands and made the most of it.

Not entirely sure he caused certain things that have possibly been attributed to him but he was definitely one for spotting them early.

Like it or not he was a precursor/forerunner to the so-called svengalis we have had ever since.

RIP

He was hardly breaking any ground in that respect. Never heard of Brian Epstein or Berry Gordy?

He always divided opinion, and the 'I created the Pistols' thing went on a bit much, but he was without doubt one of the main players in the British punk scene. Shame, and my thoughts go to his friends and family.

I most certainly have... and I'd probably throw Peter Grant in the mix too.
You're right - maybe not breaking ground - but I still think there was something, even if it is imperceptible, that McClaren brought to the game though.
All standing on the shoulders of previous 'giants' I suppose..

I must be getting old, people are passing all the time it seems,

One question who would you like as a pop puppet master Mclaren or Cowell?

Really sad he was one of punks founders, hopefully we will get a re-run of The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

But then again in today’s PC correct world of plastic pop maybe not...

It was probably the sight of Johnny Rotten flogging car insurance or whatever ad he does which finished him off.

Bit of a shock that. I didn't realise he was that old. I hated punk at the time but I think history may have proved me wrong.

For punk sake ... shite! ****! Beeeeppp!

That's that for the late punker and I bet he is happy with my comment.

Just seen the news on Twitter.

The old bugger hasn't done anything of note for a long while, but without him I doubt very much if two of my favourite bands of all time would have existed. Pistols and Bowwowwow.
Happy to say he indirectly changed my life.
RIP you old swindler.

And this is a great song.

Sorry about him dying, but I suspect he is the reason Lydon etc are still having to tour/make ads.

A great character and 'entertainer' as John Lydon has just said in tribute.

Sad and not a nice way to go 😥

He saw thru the bullshit and made a difference, he has my respect and was a big player in the history of British music. I bet he was painful to sit beside at dinner though.

sex pistols at the free trade hall was the catalyst for the manchester music scene, for that we should be thankful to MM (with the exception that Simply Red also came of it).

in today’s PC correct world of plastic pop maybe not...

Malcolm's brand of music was always plastic, disposable, throwaway, wafer-thin. Integrity wasn't his thing (and he didn't pretend it was).
ake me wonder who the new legends are...........Lady Ga Ga?

Lady Gaga is an heir of Siouxie Sioux, Kate Bush, and Madonna...with Elton John and Bucks Fizz too. But she - like the Pistols - did emerge from the arthouse/ "scene"/ underground, she can write and play her own stuff, she knows how to use the media effectively, and she's pushing an interesting "look".

In a world of N-Dubzes, Lady Gaga is not our biggest worry!

Woppit notes the passing of a hero. Who now will fill the pompous with terror, outrage the establishment and stamp on the dead hand of complacent English conformity?

So long, Malcolm.

It's a real shame, we're loosing a whole generation- Joe Strummer, Lux Interior, Ron Ashton, Malcolm McLaren, my youth appears to be dying off, probably an age thing.

There was 35 people in the audience that night at the (Lesser) Free Trade Hall. Half of Manchesters 45 to 55 year olds used to claim they were there at the time.

Mclaren was not that different to many other groups manager, saw a possiblity and worked it hard, there were other better bands at the time. That Vivienne Westwood is just a lass from Tintwisle who's got idea above herself. 🙂

I assume you've seen that very funny scene in 24 Hour Party People?

The other half claim to be close friends of "the quality street gang".

As for MM, good riddence to old rubish.

Actually, it's very, very good! If you know about music, Factory, Joy Division, Madchester etc (I don't), I think you would really enjoy it. Steve Coogan is excellent in it (and I don't usually like his stuff at all), lots of cameos/location work, lots of really good 70s/80s scenes that are well done, really interesting, very funny. Christopher Ecclestone has a cameo, too. I've seen it twice, might get it again now that I am thinking about it.

"Never seen the film, was it good?" I thought you meant the rock n roll swindle at first, which is appalingly bad (imho). 24 hour party people is an entirely different proposition - crackingly good film.
