We've got my daughter's old MBP from 2015 complete with retina screen and a whole 8gb of RAM!
It's in good condition and I hate throwing stuff out.
Is it still useful (thinking purely web browsing)?

Useful for sending to Back Market for some cash. I got £200 the other day for a 2019 MacBook

Yeah, a MBP of that era is absolutely fine for web browsing, and more besides. I would imagine the battery is pretty much toast if it's never been replaced though. I've just spent £40 on a replacement battery for my wife's old 2015 MBP that I need to install. My son uses it for web browsing (for which you can read YouTube).

If you a more recent web browser version than is available for your current OS, then you can use https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/ to get a more recent version of MacOS onto it than it officially supports.

If it's just for web browsing and media consumption I don't see why not...you don't need a super computer for posting pics of your lunch on Facebook...
If it's not annoyingly slow then it's fine.

I generally don't do any major upgrades to my pc for about 7-10 years. Doubt a Mac would be much different assuming it still gets security updates.

I still use my 2015mbp (with 8gb of RAM) most days - it's still a nice machine to use. Mostly browsing, email, YouTube and a bit of Excel.

It's been repaired a couple of times now, but it's worth it for me - I don't really need anything more powerful for browsing duties (it was my main computer until 2023, but i now have a m2 mini for the hard stuff)

You’ll be able to sell it on eBay. £100 or so? Compared with a modern Apple Silicon machine it’ll be painfully slow to use. But it’ll do most stuff OK. 2015 it will still be able to run Windows better than any Windows machine I’ve had from work ever. Even running Windows in a VM alongside MacOS based on my last experience of playing with this 😏

Otherwise it’ll make a pretty good head for a NAS?
you could run Jellyfin or other media server stuff in containers on it?

I have a MBP from 2007 that is hooked up to the TV. We used to use it to record stuff (in the days before streaming) but now it's just used for playing DVDs - it's still good for that though (and I even have a working remote for it).

i have exactly the same, its what i use all the time.

packed in a few months ago, apple said it was toast and couldnt be repaired, took it to local indie shop who put a new battery in and reset it all and its perfect for me.

i dont have an apple account, i dont sync anything with it, its purely for internet.

Perfect!
I think my daughter had sold it for £100 and tried to reset it but it went wrong so it came home where I managed to sort it.

Looks like it will be staying around then!

I had a MBP from 2013 which became painfully slow as you might expect. I bought myself a new one but only last year, I like getting good use out of stuff 😁 Mr B wiped it, installed Linux and it’s actually really handy to have for internet browsing. I was away with work a lot this year and took the old one over my new one

A 2015 MBP will run Linux but you will have fun and games getting Wi-Fi and webcam to work. It is possible though but you will need to use the terminal to do a few bits. Then managing the fans needs dealing with so they don't run at max all the time. Again solutions exist. Took me a few hours to sort mine. It flies compared to the last Mac Os it would update to.

We put a SSD in our 2012 Mac book and apart from safari not working too well is fine. Obviously I have not tried a newer one .

My similar vintage sold on eBay quite quickly for GBP160. Only changed it as some programmes like Teams were no longer supported and seemed unstable. Quite a jump to a Hoxton Mac M2 in terms of performance.

I still run a 2012 unibody MBP. It’s fine but the OS isn’t updated. I use Firefox to browse as old Safari isnt always supported. It runs teams as a backup for work too. like the old Mercedes estate that won’t die. Same build quality too.

I've got a 2013 MacBook Pro which is still in daily use for music stuff - running GarageBand, editors for my rack effects and controllers and for ripping vinyl to Apple Lossless. Perfect capable of doing the basics and the battery seems to be holding up, though usually plugged in.

Well it's all running pretty fine - it looks like I wiped everything and did a 'fresh' install when we took it off my daughter.  It's already running an SSD so that's good but the battery is pretty borked as expected. Seeing as it's more than likely not going to move much from the breakfast bar in the kitchen (where my wife likes to do most of her browsing/shopping) I think I may just leave it and run it off mains power*

Not having a fairly recent version of Chrome is a shame - might firefox be OK?

* we don't really need this as Mrs SB uses my old PixelBook which is still running OK, I have my old laptop and a desktop in my office (self-employed & WFH) ..... but as I said I hate throwing stuff away and, although I'm def not a fanboi, a MBP is a nice [but heavy] thing.
I could sell it but the money I'd get is not really worth it and the MB could come in useful at some point.

what version do you have?  i thought that chrome just regularly prompts for updates so youd soon be on the latest, is that not how it works?

but yes i also i have firefox installed and use that ok now and then.

Good question.... so I went to Chrome > Help > About Google Chrome and it automatically started downloading the update so now I'm on the latest version!

Don't know why it didn't auto-update before but all sorted now 👍

Interesting thread. I'm currently looking at 3 Intel macbook airs from 2014-2019 that I need to do something with.
I still use the 12" 2017 model to take on holiday as it's so small and light, but I really should look at moving the other 2 on.

I think that has to be the plan.
