Has anyone been to Luxembourg for a long weekend?

I'm trying to think of somewhere easily accessible by train as I don't fly

Is it ridiculously expensive?

It's not the most over-priced European city, but not the cheapest either. Seemed relatively reasonably priced last summer when the pound was a bit stronger. We had a travel card included in the hotel deal which gave free public transport anywhere in the Country. Old city is nice to mooch about, but small so you could see most of it in a day on foot. If (when) I go back I'd want to explore the surrounding area e.g. "Little Switzerland".

luxembourg city is a good day trip. as above, check out the travel card thing.
depends what you like doing on long weekend trips. plenty of walking in the hills to the north and east. the mosel/moselle was quite scenic (even more so if you're in to wine).
if it's a city break, you can always do 2 for the price of 1 and pop on the train a short distance to Trier (just inside Germany), which I think is also touristy (never been, but it's the kind of place my parents visit).

I'm assuming there's a decent train service from Brussels to Luxembourg?

I love Luxembourg, but I think you'd struggle to fill a long weekend. Two leisurely days at a push. Wouldn't you be better off at a place that is served by the Eurostar? Like Bruges or something? I went to Luxembourg by train about 5 years ago, and once off the Eurostar it was a long slow train to Luxembourg.

We visited the city for a day last summer. We didn't hang about but managed to see most of the tourist sites and wander around the shops in about 7 hours. It was red hot so the casemates were a welcome way to spend an hour. If you like to have lazy weekends away and can sit outside a cafe and chill then you might fill a weekend. If you are heading outside the city then you might be able to fill your time too.

It isn't ridiculously expensive. Probably on a par with other capital cities (but cheaper than Paris!)

I agree with the Bruges suggestion above.

If you do a bit of running they have a Saturday night half marathon which is awesome and easily justifies a weekend there.

I live in Luxembourg. It's about 6 hours from London on Eurostar including a slow but beautiful ride from Brussels to the city. For my money, the old town in Luxembourg is one of the most picturesque capital cities in Europe but as the other posters said, there's not loads to see in the city itself. If you're doing a long weekend, make sure your travelling is on a Friday and Sunday as Sunday is DEAD here so unless you're just walking around or catching the train to other towns in the country/region it's a pretty wasted day.

What I'd do if I had 1-2 days here:

Spend a couple of hours walking around the old town. If the weather is good, sit in Place d'Armes and watch the world go by (or even better, go to Vis a Vis at 2 Rue Beaumont which is a bit more local)[/*]

Take one of the walks that take you down the valley, up the other side etc. One of them is called Wenzel and the tourist info should be able to help[/*]

Get dinner, go to the Grund and Clausen to have a few drinks and mix with the locals and expats. If I was eating in the city on a Friday/Saturday I'd either go to Vin Fins in the Grund (wine, meat/cheese plates etc), Mousel's Cantine in Clausen or Goethe Stuff or Cafe Chiggeri in the Haute ville. None are going to blow your socks off (there's Michelin starred places in town if you want) but they're good quality and not too expensive. Liquid Bar in the Grund sells a good selection of Belgian and craft beers. Scotts and Oscars down there are expat bars[/*]

For a gig and bar hopping see what's on at the Rotondes or Den Atelier and see what's going on in Hollerich. Locals consider it a bit dodgy around there but for anyone who's grown up in the UK in a city it's nothing of the sort[/*]

There are loads of galleries/museums so you can easily fill a day on those if you want. The modern art museum (Mudam) and the Drei Echelen are over on a fortress opposite the city so the walk there is pretty good too[/*]

For a day trip either rent a car and go to the little Swizerland (aka Mullerthal) and walk in the woods there or train to Trier (Germany) or Metz (France), but not Arlon (Belgium).
It's not going to be a rock and roll packed weekend unless you come for National Day on June 22/23 where the city gets as wild and crazy as it ever gets here.

curto80 - it's a quarter/half/full marathon and is coming up soon 🙂

Thanks Atlaz

Better than tripadvisor 🙂

What sort of prices are the restaurants you mentioned?

For most of those I'd reckon on 15-20e for a main or 20-30e for two courses with drinks extra. Beer is usually around 2.5e a glass for the local stuff even in restaurants. There's also a really good restaurant just outside town that does three courses for around 30e at lunch and the food is awesome.

Lovely roads too (apart from the city itself at the moment). Seems to be a popular motorbike holiday choice for the smooth tarmac particularly in the north.
