Just found out I have quite high 6.9 chlestrol, I walk about 2 hours a day, bike once a week, eat fair, proper meals veg etc,but i can be a bugger for McDonald's when I am home alone,Iam 40 years old and want to get this down without going on tablets for it has anyone had any success and if so how. I know I can change my diet which I am looking at, and thinking of getting back to gym twice a week.
Does red wine not have the "good"version? I drink it anyhow....

Def think about intermittent fasting / 5:2 diet if so. Maybe do it anyway if not as you will still benefit metabolically.
It's my first time I have had it checked,other members of my family have high cholesterol, but they are on tablets for it, doctor wants to call me back in the new year, so I am planing on enjoying Christmas and buckling down in the new year and having a plan of action and see if it makes a difference, so the more info I get the better the oat bran and niacin is interesting reading, have you used this method?
I am 14 st 11 and 6ft 5 so probably on the verge of being.

life is a lottery. the numbers that stats prvide you with are just that they may or may not have any bearing/ relavance on your life. the two fittest blokes i ever met died young yet my mum and dad both late 70's have never excercised in thier lives and eat full proper meals every meal time, yet are slim and very healthy

I see a lot of young people with this in my line of work - don't ignore a high cholesterol just because you're healthy!
Had a pre-site access medical a few weeks ago and Dr Death (as all the contractors call him) was getting in a right flap about my 5.7 cholesterol level

Pomegranate juice is supposed to be good for heart disease and cholesterol, there are several studies on it. You'll have to look into it further though, things might have changed since I read the article.

Yes, cholesterol levels are monitored and maintained by the liver. Its a closed feedback loop. So if you are naturally predisposed to having high cholesterol (genetics) then I'd discuss this with your doctor.
Also, if you try to mess with those levels, your liver [i]may[/i] re-adjust to regain the levels of cholesterol you are predisposed to have...
There is a school of thought that subscribes to the theory that high cholesterol itself isn't an issue. Its only when small particile LDL is oxidized, that arterial plaque will begin to accumulate.
Again, have a chat with your Doc, but also try to sift through the web for more info.

In general, I believe most peoples Cholesterol measurements do not measure the levels of HDL, tri's and LDL. Yet alone what levels the dense LDL is within the sample measured as there appears to be an LDL "lite" particle and a "small dense" LDL particle.
My current reading seems to indicate that its the small, dense LDL which, when oxidized, will adhere to the endothelial cells.
Do you smoke (as this apparently caused my wifes'), if so stop.

Docs go OTT as they have a line they say of gold standard of 5.0 but asking around i've heard of 7.9 and folks still living on beyond 80 so just be sensible n less McdDs,cause there only short lasting crap really.

Mine just measured as 5.8 - used to be 5.2 when 22, and 5.1 about 12 years ago.
Doctor wasn't fussed, said HDL levels were good.
I drink about a pint of silver top milk every 2 days and use butter occasionally - might change the latter and try benecol cheese and spreads - skimmed milk is not an option...
ISTR that there's no proven link between dietary fat intake and cholesterol levels.

I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about 2 years ago. Did all the diet changes oats, fish, no red meat, no butter, cut out most sat fat etc etc result f*ck all difference. GP then did a risk test based on my height, weight etc plus family history and said if it was over 15% we would have to consider statins, over 20% then I was going on statins. My came out at 3.9%. Turns out my mums side of the family has high cholesterol as a standard state and all have lived into their 80s so I'm not too concerned about it but still cutting out the crap food as much as I can as that has wider beneifts anyway.
