After 14 years of loyal service, we had our rescue lab/collie x put down yesterday. I knew I'd miss her and had a week or so to get ready for it, but am completely gutted. I had her longer than the wife & kids!

Crazy how important they are, eh?

I don't post at all really and know there's a search button for similar threads, but I always enjoy reading the dog-friendly ones.

Sorry to hear that, it certainly is a wrench. I don't have a dog, so can't help with pics, but I've always been a dog person (we had dogs when I was a kid) and would love one if my lifestyle allowed.

I'm sure they'll be some dog people along soon who can share their pooches.

Watson on a rug

Can't help, but I can image the pain you feel. Watson says 'hi', and is ready for a walk.

Sorry about your dog. It's something i've gone through dozens of times. My mum used to breed Golden Retreivers and we'd have 4 or 5 in the house at any one time  when I was growing up.

This is Poppy and she's 8 months old.

Feel for you. We went 13 years after loosing Surf our Collie before we got another. In hindsight we should have done it alot sooner

We have had Fin for 4 years now and cant imagine being without her.

Xena, our Werewolfhound*.

We haven't had any problem with werewolves, vampires, and zombies since we got her.

Doesn't look so big in that pic, so here's some scale...

That sucks, Mog.

We lost our old mutt late last year, was gutted. He was going on 12 and still pretty vigorous at the time.

It's horrible when you lose a dear loved pet. Lost our 1 year old cat two weeks ago to a 'car'.

Damn, not looking forward to that day 🙁

Hope doesn’t live with me anymore, but she’s still my girl. She stayed the past week, has got a bit of a wimp in the cold, so we improvised a jacket

I’m sure you have her a truly wonderful life - especially after a bad start as a rescue.  All the love she gave you and you gave her is still there - it won’t go away.

Take care and thinking of you.

It's about 18 months since we had to do that, I don't envy you right now.

About 12 months later, we realised that we are doggy people, we just didn't have a dog. So we rescued Bella, a 4.5 year old bull lurcher.

I'll see if I can get the wife to post some pics (she's taken enough).

@househusband, are those names because they feel the need for speed?

This is mine and Onza's greyhound x staffy girly - she's been with us almost 4 months now and it's actually a little weird to think we went almost a whole year without a dog. I'm sorry you're going through this though Mog - it's definitely the hardest thing about having a dog, I think. But the time they are with you makes life so much richer, that it's always worth it (even if it maybe doesn't feel it right now).

Couldn't be without them.  Had 2 brown & white springers before these 2.  Just fantastic.

Zippy is that an Otterhound?

My sister and law lost hers recently.

Fantastic dog but thick as mince.

@Onzadog - We realised that after we'd named Goose!  We went for a walk four years ago once we'd decided to get a dog and discussed names; a goose went after me on the walk and I threw it in there as a suggestion.  However, when we got the first pup (Charlie) we realised the name didn't work with his fawn colour so we names him after my wife's late Father.  A year or two we later we got the blue whippet pup and Goose really works for him!

Sorry to hear about your loss Mog. I don't know whats worse, losing your pet to it dying or having to rehome. Wev'e lost pets due to natural causes & accidents before, which is horrible, but we had to rehome Wilma last year due to my wifes illness, I cried a lot.

Hope your'e having lots of love & fun Wilma!

Sorry for your loss , Im about to go through the same thing as my old chocky lab is getting slower by the day and I think the warmer weather will be the final nail in his coffin. Im dreading it and dreading how it will affect the family and our other wee dog Gus.

Photo's taken last summer.

Girlfriends sister had her as a rescue 14 years ago. We borrowed her 2 years ago and she never went back 🙂 She'll be 16 next week and is still running rings around me and waking me up at 6:30am for a walk.

This is the worst part of having a dog, and it's when you need to remember the joy they bring for all the rest of the time they are with you.

So, rather than a pic I offer an old poor quality vid.

(Absolutely nothing to do with the fact I still haven't managed to post a pic since the update)
