....and struggling!

There's lots about but I want something VERY simple (No shelves or plinths or racks!) ideally like this

http://hecklerdesign.com/onelessdesk/

but affordable and in the UK!

Failing that, a simple table would be perfect, but I can't find a nice plain one (gloss white would be best, dark grey might work) that's the right size - About 50 x 75 cm

I've tried , Ebay and Habitat.... Nothing much there but I might have missed something.....

Any suggestions?

Ta muchly 🙂

The design looks simple enough, why not get one made?

Those computer desks are a pet hate of mine, fricken awful things, with shelves too low or high to be comfortable. Check out the Heckler picture, she leaning forward to use the keyboard, yet she having to look up at the screen (slightly, enough to cause issue though) really, really terrible posture & they’ve used it as their main advert! They also are generally too small to actually layout your keyboard, mouse, telephone and any paper work your looking at in a sensible way. Again look at the heckler picture, where would you put anything?.

Horrible horrible things, but obviously this is more an office enviroment issue I'm talking about, might not be so much of an issue for home use where you only sit there for up to an hour or so.
Still being comfortable is important, and I simply wouldn't recommend buying anything but a "normal" flat desk of a good height & a decent adjustable chair to match – though the size you’ve specified is obviously limiting your options. That ikea one has a low support plank at the back, I’d be worried that my knee’s will hit this constantly (used to have one like this, again nasty).

Can you tell the g/f was the DSE assessor when we met & has since gone on to do her Ergonomic master's

Make your own. An off cut of some wooden worktop (or an old door?) and some legs. Ikea do some plain desk tops and legs.

I've got http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70162490/ and four http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70105292/ - unfortunately, the top only has four solid sections and the rest is hollow. A solid wooden top would be better, like http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50106773/.

Nahh, sorry, not making my own. It's going in a nice neat kitchen/diner and that will just look like a bodge.
EDIT
The legs/top thing might work actually, having looked at it, but that wood top will stick out like a sore thumb in our kitchen!

I don't need a lot of space, it's for an , it just nees to fit in the corner and not look bulky. The chair will be a dining chair, there's no room to put another chair in the room, and no need either, as one will be 18 inches away!

IKEA. As said, they do various legs that will suit then either get one of their tops or source your own - if it's for a kitchen/diner then maybe some extra worktop of the same stuff.

We have a couple of tops and a combination of legs and drawer units that make up a 3M long twin desk in our spare room / home office. Works great. Stick one of these underneath to keep cables, external hard disk, power adaptors, etc tidy and out of the way.

TBH I know I wasn't helping, I just hate comuter desk, awful nasty rubbish... I need to vent about it, as much as possible 😳
Having a decent adjustable chair is icing on the cake, but even mine is a pretty basic 2nd hand thing

Mike's idea is pretty good though, I'm sure you could get a work surface to match or compliment the room, sticking a couple of legs on it would be easy.

The one less desk design would be good if the sub-table were a little higher so she could get her legs under it.

You could do the same with a couple of 'console' tables from mainstream manufacturers.

The advantage of such as desk arrangement is obviously that you can slide the sub-table under the main table when finished with it, and having the keyboard/mouse lower helps avoid arm problems.

Add a decent office chair with adjustable back rake, seat tilt and good lumbar support and then sit in a slightly reclined position, not bolt upright like health and safety try to get you to do.

Don't be tempted by those kneeling stools for saving space as they put a load of stress through your knees.

Is it for a laptop or desktop? CRT monitor or LCD?

Something like http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10139134/ might work well as a low-usage desk for a laptop? Though, if it's for a laptop, you could just stick it on the dining table when you need it.

This is nice http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50115598/ or try and find something second hand, like a traditional drop down bureau thing?

Mike, it's for a 27in iMac..... 🙂

So pretty big and heavy, but a small footprint.

I've actually just been down to B&Q for a timer switch, and I had a look round. They sell legs but their prices are silly, however they do have lengths of white worktop for £28, and they'll cut to size. I can get 4 legs from Ikea for £13 or less depending on colour, and then 2 steel edge strips are around £15 from B&Q, so what's that? £56?

As long as I can keep it neat I think I might go for that. I think that's all I need.

I also went to Ikea and bought this one.

Lots of room, fairly solid real wood, the shelf at the back is handy for speakers/modem/tissues. Tall enough to sit under properly.

Can you wall mount it? Or, just use a shelf?

Then, you could sit in a nice comfy chair with a wireless keyboard.

Mike, yes it is possible to wall mount it. But we don't want to for various reasons, and I'm getting the keyboard with the numeric pad (I'm king of keyboard shortcuts and its better laid out for that as well as having the numeric pad and 2 USB ports in it) and that's not wireless.....

Apart from that, good thinking! 🙂

We got one of these:

http://www.made.com/tables/stroller-desk-walnut

If you've got a modem/router with low heat output, it can go inside

Second the wall mount option. I currently have mine on an Ergatron MX arm, which swings off a fixed built in desk. May work if you have a kitchen counter etc nearby ? Then a simple table top for the keypad ?

Also use the LX arm for a cintix screen, and while gives further reach i don't think its rated weight wise to the 27".

Ergatron

Ergatron also do a range of keyboard supports that can be attached.

And also, if you do go down the mounted road ... there is a new VESA mount for the newer 2011 iMacs that I've only found on the apple store, similar ones found elsewhere (i.e. amazon) don't fit.

Err no he doesn't! Too big. See sizes quoted in OP..... 🙂

That said, it's a beautiful bit of furniture at a reasonable price IMO.

Second the wall mount option

NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! Already said that!!!! 🙂

(Plus those things are frigging ugly as sin)

That desk looks like it'll snap away from the legs if you put any serious load on the front or back edge of it.

can't you wall mount it

He's already answered that question.

2 steel edge strips

Noooooo! Get some edging (normally supplied with the worktop) a tub of contact adhesive & a file. Proper edging will look much better.

Right. This is the room its going in.

Bear in mind the 10-20mm Sigma lens I took this shot with makes the space look a LOT bigger than it is. Also, the round table has been replaced with a rectangular one. The far right hand corner is the spot. The space between the radiator and the wall is 1.1m, but if I use all that space it'll intrude into the dining table space, so I want as small a desk as possible. 27in display is 65cm wide, so a table 70-75cm would be about right, just a tad wider than the monitor. We currently have a small table in that corner with a lamp and some pictures on it, which is 55cm square. If I could go a tad shallower than that I'd be happier, but I need to take a tape measure into an Apple store to be sure it would fit first, with the keyboard in front.

I don't need room for a modem, that's elsewhere. As is the printer. I want something plain and clean looking, one drawer under might be useful for bits and bobs, but that's it, and I'm not bothered if it's just a table. 🙂

We won't be drilling into the wall for several reasons, and if I explain them someone will argue and tell me I'm wrong, which I'm not, so I won't bother. 🙂

The idea of making my own is currently the most appealing, so thanks for that, it's a good idea!
I do love some of those tables that have been linked to, but they're the wrong size and TBH I can't swing £300 to put it on right now either! 🙂

Emsz, I think it's the best option.

(And it's not so boring when you get pulled for not knowing it! 😉 )

We have just freecycled 8 office computer tables here in Worcestershire.

If its local PP, we might still have some left?

Ski, any use as workshop benches? (or are they too good/not stable enough)
Could do with a proper sturdy bench.

Ski, that's a kind offer! I live in Farnborough, work near Brizzle, so Wiltshire isn't too far out of the way.... 🙂

What you got? Anything 80cm x 55cm maximum?

Email in profile 🙂

What about cutting up the round dining table that you have taken out ? Make it into a corner unit ...

Scuff it up and paint it white ... or add a top similar to the kitchen surfaces to blend it in more ...
