Simple enough one, I hope. I have wood. I need to split it for the new stove. Any recommendations for a log splitter?

Splitting maul.... pick a coolish day...... fill yer boots. Warning - can be slightly addictive!

If your wood is anything but straight grain/free splitting then you'll need something more substantial and expensive than the basic 4 tonne electro-hydaurlic jobs from Machine Mart and alike.

I've learned that wood handles are kinder to old bones, and fibreglass transmits shocks much more. That's for an occasional user. I go for wedges and a sledgehammer meself. And I'll let the wood dry enough to see cracks starting, to know where to split it. That's in complicated pieces where it's knotty or forked particularly.

Oh, and for a normal round log, start at the outside.

depends on the size of wood etc.
I really like the Fiskars splitting axe.

But to split a section of tree trunk (i.e. large round), i've found the most effective way to be using a chainsaw to cut/mark a cross in the middle (about 1-2cm deep) then use a log genade and sledge hammer. Once split into quarters, use the splitting axe.

I've used an Oregon splitting maul and a large axe....

...I like the look of these splitting axes, they look a bit lighter than a splitting maul, but I suppose it depends on what you are splitting.

Then I built my own hydraulic log splitter and things got out of hand.
