Where would you recommend someone should live in the UK with respect to quality of life, availability of work and good riding?

Scotland - specifically, Edinburgh.

Yorkshire

Good riding in the Dales, Moors, Dalby and Stainburn.

Big towns and cities with (generally) high employment.

Good transport links means Scottish and Welsh trail centres both accessible.

Towns like Harrogate, Richmond and Ilkley very nice. Cities like York and Leeds have plenty of social life.

Well I like it 🙂

Being a bit more specific [s]my friend[/s] I have a lot of sales experience in the motor trade (Brown Brothers) and the air conditioning industry and have spent the last few years teaching English. Got a business degree anything else you need?

Everybody is going to say their home town...

My answer is North Manchester.

I'm from North Manchester.

Speaking from the point of view of someone who has lived in Manchester before moving across the border... Wales. Cardiff specifically.

My answer is Bristol, but I don't want you anywhere near me, so best head up North and make occasional trips south for culture.

isle of man..............search it in trail guide...it's like a little bit of UK at every turn...............plus plenty of jobs and wages are normally at the scale of "london" wages from experiance....but you live in the country side....i have a 5 minute drive into work and a two minute ride from my house into the country side. do it!!

Airedale, Yorkshire
Originally from the South but been here around 15 yrs, no complaints. Plenty of riding, east coast surf, good beer, curry, good transport links, handy for Leeds/Manc/London-ish

In fact, you won't like here, your better off down south. 😀

I'm with Harry on the North Manchester / East Lancashire area.

Also only an hours drive away from The Lakes, The Peaks, Yorkshire and then all your own countryside and rides right outside your door.

Salaries are less though but then so is the price of beer & eating out

Depends on what you mean by "work". Not a lot of call for deep-sea divers in the Cotswolds.

Oh yeah the availability of work things not fab round here at the moment but then I'd guess that depends on what you do? We may be screaming out for open heart surgeons or specialised teachers, what do you do?

Oxfordshire, specifically the chilterns?

Lots of good riding and decent jobs in the larger towns and in Oxford. London a short hop, wales and the west not far.

Nowhere near East Anglia, although Kent can be nice.

Cardiff is pretty good for riding. As are places up North like Sheffield, although Cardiff is also close to proper open countryside and nice seaside.

Then you've got places West like Exeter.

If you are in the motor trade then you should be able to get work anywhere I'd have thought, which is a pretty big boon tbh. The more prosperous a place is the more cars will be sold, no?

Isle of Wight. Where else can you commute to work by hovercraft?

I suppose you could buy one and fly it up the A3, but that would be suicidal.

There are one or two places I've already written off, so no worries there. I appreciate some people are going to give home towns, but if there is something that fits the bill, it'll be worth a look.

No need to worry on that count. 😥

Note that I'm not from Cardiff, I just live there cos it's good, on the whole.

I grew up in Herefordshire which is lovely if you like small towns and countryside, no big cities and being near Wales.

I moved from Brisbane. I 1st lived in Bristol for a bit for exactly those 3 reasons. Work moved me to Edinburgh which is even better! But at a squeeze, I'd definately move back to Brizzle without too much thought.

No? 🙁

Whassup with her?

(Actually Bristol would suit a man like yourself down to the ground...my rowing club has a thriving vet squad...just bugger all boats)

Nothing, I'll tell off forum.

I can't remember now but don't you achieve vets status at a young age in rowing? I've been a vet for 100s of years!!

I don't like Bristol that much. It's quite middle class which is good but the city's choked with traffic mostly, there are large significantly rough bits and consequently a big bike theft problem (and things like wire across bike trails 🙁 ), naff all decent riding really, and it's a bit too big. Oh and the shopping and town centre are terrible, if that matters to you.

No point in trying to refute what mol has said there except to say it's mostly claptrap and bollocks. Anytime you need a look around, then let me know. 🙂

I'm from Wrecsam, so not really a problem. Had some good work out of Bristol when they built one of the shopping centres (10 odd years ago), so they're not all bad.
Cheers for that M_F.

There are plenty of good shops in Bristol don't get me wrong, it's just that you don't really want to go 'into town' to wander round, chill, eat, drink, relax etc. whereas you can in Cardiff.

I'd choose Bath personally.

Surely you're getting them the wrong way round? I only have limited experience of both cities, but I'd take Brizzle over Cardiff any day of the week.

Which part of Bristol did you like?

Bath is good too, dunno about the riding mind.

I notice that everyone from the really nice places is keeping quiet.

Most really nice places I know about are small, which makes it hard to pick up work in them. Brecon, for example, is a pretty decent place to live for an MTBer.

Can recommend south yorks - west of m1 near barnsley.

Lots of villages, easy to access to Leeds/Sheffield/manchester if needed.

Fantastic mountain biking and road biking - peaks are 15-20 min cycle. Cut gate is an easy ride from the front door...

Decent folk too.

Bristol is horrid. Squalid, filthy place.

Couldn't believe how Cardiff and Bristol could be so different.

The riding is not bad either 8)

Plenty on the doorstep (if you know where to look) and easy access to Wales, Quantocks, Mendips, Cotswolds, Salisbury Plan, Longleat and the Deverills.

And 4 Great bike shops (or should that be 3 great ones and another one?)

Pricey in comparison to Bristol of course (but you get what you pay for 😉

Can I, as a country boy(auld yin)recommend something other than a clogged up "big city" type place and recommend Dumfries and Galloway, the Borders or Lake District.
No idea if you will/can find work but the benefits of rural living far outweighs the hustle & bustle and agro of city living.
Took a few "city breaks" last year darn sarf and could not wait to get home with no intention of repeating any of the visits regardless of "culture" If you want/need "culture" it is possible to find it out in the sticks 💡 if you really need it.

jet26 has it spot on. I would live there like a shot but kids at school in sheffield so we have to stay put for now.
Plus if you move to penistone you get to live somewhere with an hilarious place name too.

Personal choice for a place name would be Rhosllanerchrugog.
