Got my back to the TV, but can someone finally tell me how or why the government funds a for profit company.

My logic says that if a company is making profits after recieving government funding, it should use those for investment, improvements etc and not pass onto the shareholders.

Have I got that right? because if I have isn't that like the government putting money directly into their pockets.

I thought any profits from the recent price rises (or the 3% above inflation component of them) went back into government coffers for future investment? As a way of reducing the tax payer burden?

I notice Scotrail have stuck to a 'mere' 1% above inflation, means its still marginally cheaper for me to take my bike up north on holiday than flying to the Alps. Just. 🙄

It's always been this way since privatisation.

Public transport is all but nationalised except the profits go to buy fancy cars and houses for shareholders instead.

It's a great system, isn't it?
