Please can you tell me about LinkedIn and why I should be on there.

Desperately need a new job (but that's another story) - will a LinkedIn account help?

I've always avoided social networking stuff for security reasons but is LinkedIn OK?

Thanks!

Very wise. I am of the same opinion and don't faceache at all.

However, LI seems a very valuable tool from a professional standpoint. I have been able to get some very interesting consultancy/freelance work on the side as a result of some of my connections on there, and it's also a very good way of finding out about jobs. Worth it, IMO. As ever, though, think very carefully about what you put on there as it is visible.

Yes it is okay. Basically its an online CV plus connections to folk you have worked with or know professionally.

A potential employer may search your name on it, look at your connections and recommendations.

It works, but don't pay for the 'extras'.

I think it depends on what industry you are in, for me there has been very little on it for years. Although it is starting to get more popular now so I should spend more time on it.

As usual you get out what you put in. It wont do any harm, unless you express non-pc views etc....

I'm in sales, sort-of, and it's invaluable. I've also had job offers from it.
A friend who was unemployed had numerous consultancy projects & enquires through it, as headhunters use it lots for research. It doesn't really work until you've got 20+ connections except for the job board included.

Make sure that the information you put on it is more or less the same as on the CV you send out to employers as HR is likely to check it out.

In the process of setting up my profile, as I'm in IT more than half my team were already on it. Be prepared for some ridicule of have very few connections when starting up (least I got some stick)

I was really unsure of which job titles to use, and having reviewed some people's profiles it seems 'stretching' the truth appears to be pretty much the norm.

The amount of BA's, developers and designers who used to work for me and have claimed to have been project managers during that time is astounding.

I'm on it, but I'm not sure it's worth it, never gets me any interest or contacts other than people I already know and work with.

I seem to have ended up with mtb'ers claiming they know me!

I have made some useful contacts through it, and got useful information via interest groups. Now I add a link to my LI profile to my e-mail sig, including for work emails that I send externally. Every little helps!!

A potential employer may search your name on it, look at your connections and recommendations.

I use it when I'm recruiting, including to locate potential candidates for our recruiter to target.

It's always the first place I'd go when either recruiting or dealing with a supplier/customer.

It's nice to see what people I know are up to as well, way better than facebook where everyone chatters away like monkeys in a tree and twitter which appears to be people slapping their heads so random thoughts fall out into the keyboards.
