What does Linkedin do exactly? Is it like a 'business' facebook or is it just a trolling site for employment agencies?

stanboardman, combination of the two. Not just recruiters who span either, plenty of other people on there!

I kind of use it like a Facebook for work. Some folks are colleagues but not friends as such and that's the vague line I draw. It's also good when you might need a new job or interested to see what's out and about.

It's interesting isn't it? What definies you as a person, is it your job or your hobbies or family. I think it is all three and if you can combine some then that can never be a bad thing!

Chamonix666 is linked to three (unconnected) people I know and yet I've never met him. That's awesome.

Linked in some facts....
100 million users worldwide
1 million new user per week
5.5 million users in the UK
Average user age 43 up from 41 last year.

Recruiters do indeed use it, as I do but many direct employers use it too. Linked in have 3 revenue streams. In order of least revenue generated they are:

3. Subscriptions from user upgrades
2. Advertising
1. Sales of recruitment tools direct to employers (not recruiters)

Cheers for joining guys, it should help get the group off the ground. It seems a lot of us are in business development of one sort or another so this could actually help us all!! Work life is so much about networing these days so if it is something we need to do, at least Mountain biking can be a common denominator.

What's it for?

Who knows, but personally I get on better with and enjoy being around people I have shared interest with. I am passionate about mountain biking so if I can use that passion in my career then it makes sense to me. Also, I suppose the key to networking is not think what a network can do for you, but what you can do for the network. It's a good karma, reciprocal sort of thing.

Me neither, but I might be job hunting towards the end of the summer and would prefer to work with/for someone who appreciates a life outside of work. You never know what could happen....

Hehe 🙂

Not averse to the idea but I dunno how it'll help - I'm not 'in business' as such.

Unless anyone needs a Java developer or a CTO or something 🙂

I also joined, but now you're all making me feel guilty for going windsurfing yesterday evening instead of the normal Thursday night Cannock Chase ride.

PS - Gizzajob! (which I guess is what half the people on there join for)

I've don't use LinkedIn much but networking in my industry is fairly important. Without much effort It has just got me a new job and I had several offers before that. It's also useful for finding new suppliers (or more likely them finding me).

Is that the same job as was posted on here ages ago? Offering equity instead of money?

Yeah, the job was posted on here by someone a while ago, presumably who came across it on techcrunch (or similar) - not an employee of ours. I saw it and advised my colleague, who continued the discussion on it then.

As per the job description, it a revenue share and equity position - needless to say there is a monthly income. We've had a fair bit of interest and interviewed a number of people, just not found the perfect candidate yet. details in the link...

I try not to mix my STW account with work (other than clearly this thread), and will continue to do so!

Never used, or looked at, LinkedIn. I have it in my head that it's Facebook for people who think they're above that sort of thing. Is it worth joining then, or is it yet another site for me to sign up to and then ignore?

It's not really facebook. It's just a way of putting yourself online in a work sense, and showing your connections.

So for example, say an employer lets a bunch of people go. Someone can find all the people who are now looking for new jobs easily. And if you find someone good you can see all the people they knew and see if people endorse them.

Just a way to find suitable people really imo. For wahtever it is you need.

I use it, and it's been great for keeping in touch with old work colleagues. You have to be very careful to think what kind of messages the Linked In updates send to your current/potential employer (they get a digest of who is linking to who), so you might be linking to someone who is a personal friend, but if he works for the competition it can send the wrong message to others.

It also tracks (and displays) who's been looking at profiles (dunno if you can turn this off?).

Is that muchbetteradventures.com the same company who were recruiting for a creative director (or some fancy title) in exchange for non-paid work?

Seem to remember a thread about it either here or SDH.

I find linkedin useful so far (started using in Dec). Not using it to full effect but had a couple of potential job offers come via it.

I generally spend my lunch time reading the group discussions I'm linked to (sad I know)

Work life is so much about networing these days

Typo.

You missed the "h" 😉

It also tracks (and displays) who's been looking at profiles (dunno if you can turn this off?).

Yes, you can prevent other people from seeing who's profile you've been looking at. The price you pay for this is not being able to see who's been looking at yours.
