I need to hacksaw 50mm diameter bar and would like a guide, very much like a steerer tube cutting guide, but bigger. But I'm struggling to find a guide that goes to 50mm. Any ideas?

Just wrap a bit of paper to give yoi a straight line then use a hack saw.

Cutting straight with a hacksaw is not difficult.

I'm doing quite a few cuts, so want a guide rather than 'by-eye'.

I've drawn a blank from my searches so far. Seems odd they don't exist at all... Maybe they exist but I'm searching the wrong terms.

They seem to exist, but look a tad pricey (although there are probably cheaper options around). This thing's on a welding site, but I assume it's a saw guide.

Yep, too pricey, but there may be cheaper one somewhere.

I 'saw' this, which isn't far off.

I might have to modify a cheap steerer guide at this rate...

Use a plumbing tube/pipe cutter, that's how I've cut every steerer tube I've done. You're jumping up a level to cut 50mm diameter but a quick Google suggests £35 will get you something suitable

it's solid bar, so no-go for a pipe cutter

This goes to 44m, so might be extended to 50mm with some dremelling...

If you've got quite a few to do that's surely going to get old quickly with a hack saw. Why not consider a metal cutting blade for a mitre saw (if you have one) or something like this:

This was some aluminium profile I cut on my miter saw with a Bosch aluminum Cutting blade. Went up to doing 80x80 heavy duty profile with no bother (apart from needing to cut from two sides to make it all the way through) and left a lovely finish.

cheers. Yes, it looks like the mitre saw option is a good one. I just need a decent blade.

Oh aluminium.

I wouldn't even change the blade 🤣

Is it Aluminium you're wanting to cut? Doesn't say in the OP. If steel I'd be going for an angle grinder with a cutting disk or taking it to work and using the power saw. Do you have any mates who work in a factory or somewhere with a maintenance workshop? Power Saw would be pretty common in that setting.

If you're doing several cuts in 50mm steel bar find a machine shop with a mechanical hacksaw or band saw.

If you're trying to build up your sawing arm then mitre box as used for cutting joints in wood might help.

cheers all. It's solid alu bar, so going to mitre saw the hell out of it I think. Slow and easy, new blade.

You aren’t going to mitre saw the hell out of 50mm solid bar as the teeth will fill with shit and stop it cutting in pretty short order , I learned this the hard way, you will need to wax the blade or use wd40 as a cutting fluid

If you've got lots to do once, and you know what tolerance on length you need, and you haven't already bought the stock. Just buy it precut, local metal supplier would likely do, or lots of online places popping up.
