Anyone know what the lift thing (which currently has a couple of Weir's containers on its platform) on the Traff side of the M62 at Barton Bridge is, and what it's for?

It's a new bridge. Crosses the Ship Canal and then a new relief road will go past the jjb stadium and out toward Irlam which is generally badly congested with traffic heading in towards Manchester. It needs to lift to that height so the big boats can still get through to the quays.

appears to have been lifted for stress weight testing today, and failed, fell 60 foot downwards, pictures show its really buckeled underneath. also most of the cables that lift it seem to have snapped.

James May has been asked to rebuilt it using Meccano.
