Always surprised how well trained most dogs in Germany compared to the UK. In town you'll often see dogs off the lead running alongside their Herrli (owner), waiting at traffic lights and being generally well behaved.
Not sure if it's partly because in Germany you still pay a dog tax and as such people take ownership more seriously. Everyone I know in Germany with a dog took it to puppy training classes.
Amongst my extended family over half my cousins have dogs (25 cousins just on my mother's side) and only one of them is "trained" to the point it does what you tell it (although the owner is a dog walker and behaviour coach).

Whilst out jogging a stupid little dog was barking and nipping at my heels "oh it's the high Viz" pipes up the owner, so I bent down and shouted right in it's face - it didn't bother me one bit when I passed them again later, I felt like a right bell end though but it looked like all it needed was some discipline 😀
My observation is that seriously bad dog owners are in the minority. But then again, the number of not awful but also not very good dog owners seems to be quite large. Their dogs don’t savage you or kill livestock… but loads of owners let their dogs bark, approach and scare little kids, run off leads in nature reserves or beaches, etc. Not all dogs and owners will do all of those things and some owners attempt to control unruly barky dogs and fail. In the end though, the combined impact of all these dogs is not insignificant.
This country has a dog fetish and there is nothing a normal person can do about it.
I'll have to remember this for the next car thread where people are asserting that nothing else gets such special treatment.

GF and I got chased by two massive Maremma Sheep dogs for 100m or so the other day….. Bearing their teeth. Was a bit scary. Did nothing for my Z2 training. Squirted my water bottle at them and fortunately they backed off.
No idea what we else we could do…. There were another two in the adjacent field trotting over, too. No owner around for miles.

We've had this discussion a hundred times over. Some dog owners are responsible, clean up after their pets, put effort into exercise and training. Other dog owners vary between overly-defensive "my fur-baby has never done that before" and outright self-centred c***s. Which is the minority or majority is likely subjective and influenced by confirmation bias, and not really relevant in any case.
The bottom line though is that people trump dogs (and cars). If you're a dog owner and your attitude is "oh, he's only being friendly" or "she doesn't like hi-vis" then this is a You problem. I love dogs, I think they're ace, but out for a walk in clean-on-this-morning trousers I don't particularly want to be covered in muddy paws and slobber. This should not be considered an outlandish request.

Currently in Minor Injuries having been bitten by a dog on the way to work. Calf bite, puncture wounds and swelling so they wanted to look at it and check it over.3 dogs (one large, two medium) ran at me all off the lead whilst cycle commuting. No idea which one bit me. Owners didn’t apologise, said I was cycling too fast and walked off.
It was always going to happen quite frankly. The amount of dogs that run at me and almost bite when I’m cycling – one was always going to find my leg eventually.
I’m beyond anger – what’s the point. This country has a dog fetish and there is nothing a normal person can do about it.

Of course we had to slow down to pass dogs that were off a lead. And some horses. And some families with kids.

I'm not meaning just passing a group of walkers- of course you slow then and use a bell as I always do - I'm talking about the dogs that are not under control thus causing you to brake more than you would just to pass a group of walkers. I'm talking about those dogs on extending leads runnning around causing you to brake hard to avoid them

I tend to ignore the legal situation and work on the basis that if a dog and their owner are out enjoying the same space as me, I'll slow down so I don't affect their enjoyment. Slowing down doesn't affect mine.
That obviously doesn't apply if a dog is being aggressive and intimidating.
As above - I was meaning having to slow more than you would just to pass a person. (edit - because the dog is not under control as is the owners legal responsibility.)

Ok so last post on this. Had a chance to calm down and am feeling a bit shaky. It was a big dog and could have really hurt me. Unfortunately I'll probably be slightly nervous around dogs now for a while and that's the most annoying thing as their actions (or lack of) will have a direct impact on me. The reason it didn't take any more chunks out of me was that it was actually probably more of a reflex action/peer group pressure/[playful dog. There were 3 dogs and they saw me from about 200 yards away (I didn't surprise them}. One of them tore towards me and the other two followed living their best life - when they got to me it was all jumping, snapping, barking and one of them nipped me. Then they lost interest and tore off somewhere else {this was all off-road on the South Downs). To be honest if the owners had apologised instead of denying I had even been bitten despite the blood then the whole thing would have been if not amicable then a lot better.
As for that idiot commenting 'I've got form' I'm not sure what that actually means but yes I've been attacked by a dog on my commute before though it didn't bite me - That was actually more scary as that was a proper nasty dog unlike this one. Again the owner blamed me for basically riding a bike where she wanted to walk her dog.
Anyway that was my day and contrary to another lame poster somewhere on the first page, I really wish it hadn't turned out like that - I was not 'enjoying it too much' The first 23km of my commute was great though.

I think its very understandable to feel that way. I also don't understand the need at all for the piss taking. I hope your injury heals and more importantly i hope you can get past the nervousness, i have been there and its not pleasant.
But please do report it,or ot goes under the radar and nothing can be done. I won't be as naive to think your report alone will amount to much but if its on record the next person to report it will have corroboration atleast.
I love dogs but that sort of behaviour proper pisses me off. Report them and heal up. I do appreciate a stubborn dog though. Last night I had to stop for an old bulldog that was simply chilling out in the middle of the path. The owners other two dogs were obediently sat by her side. The bully clearly did not give a shit. Gave me a great opportunity to stop, chat to a friendly, if somewhat mortified lady and pet a lovely curmudgeon of an old dog. Couldn’t give a shit about the legalities. My dog is a bit of a dickhead tbh. I keep him on the lead when out. Trained him to sit, wait and recall and then he randomly just stopped responding. Having his balls cut off this Friday and then back to rigorous training once he’s healed. The pesky fool.

I like to nip past dogs and disappear sharpish. On one occasion when a dog gave chase, snapping at my ankle, the owner said 'you were going too fast'. How am I expected to know all the personal preferences of dogs off the lead? Meatheads

On the Ridgeway, near where I live, the new exciting (and definitely getting more common) dog owner thing is leaving your poo bag in very visible view on the main track so that they can pick it up on the way back (I know this after challenging someone who left a bag).
anyway the question is, if i was to leave a scrap fridge (or similar) on your garden for a while , would it be ok as long as I picked it up on the way back ? 🙂
