Currently in Minor Injuries having been bitten by a dog on the way to work. Calf bite, puncture wounds and swelling so they wanted to look at it and check it over.
3 dogs (one large, two medium) ran at me all off the lead whilst cycle commuting. No idea which one bit me. Owners didn’t apologise, said I was cycling too fast and walked off.
It was always going to happen quite frankly. The amount of dogs that run at me and almost bite when I’m cycling - one was always going to find my leg eventually.
I’m beyond anger - what’s the point. This country has a dog fetish and there is nothing a normal person can do about it.
Im sure it will happen again.
Owners didn’t apologise, said I was cycling too fast and walked off.
What grade A ****s!
No.
the dog needs removing from the owner and rehoming with someone who can already look after dogs properly. The owner needs a caution, a ban from keeping animals and a £1000 fine which is donated to the NHS.
That really sucks, hope it’s a quick recovery. I would suggest reporting it to the police but I’m unsure how helpful that/they would be
im a dog owner and I love dogs. I have been at the receiving end of both angry dogs and angry owners. My dogs largely stay on lead as they are stupid and unpredictable. That’s for their sake and others sake. The dogs in question sound out of control which is against the law. Owners should be punished
I hope this doesn’t turn into the usual dog ownership argument
This is a Police matter. Report it, request help identifying the dogs and owners locally maybe on social media.
In the meantime, hope its nothing serious and you heal fast.
Police and watch the snivelling when Dangerous Dogs Act gets applied. Some dog-owners don't help themselves and the attitude displayed indicates that a harsh lesson for dogs and owner is required.
That's awful.
Report to the police and try to move on with your life. Not gonna help you to fume about it.

As a dog owner... Agreed. Definitely post on da socials dog owners generally know othe dog owners especially the nightmares i'd happily shop any owner allowing this happen so it doesn't happen again (or contributes to it not happening again). Please report it it might be the final trigger needed for something to be done or atleast go on the record.
Also. I am really sorry it happened, i was bitten in the face by a dog and it took me quite a while to be happy around them again and still don't trust anything that approaches in an odd manner.
I'm sorry this happened OP, as a dog owner, it really annoys me when people don't control their dogs properly. Healing vibes.
I’m beyond anger – what’s the point. This country has a dog fetish and there is nothing a normal person can do about it.
I think the issue is this country has a surfeit of ****less morons who spoil things for everyone else, its not limited to people who don't take proper care of dogs unfortunately.

Very much this.
Another idiot ruining it for us responsible dog owners. Mine's trained to sit at my feet for all cyclists and runners we encounter. Although he's an unemployed Collie and loves a job to do.
Have you considered going on a more appropriate forum to vent? Say Dogsnet - or even mumsnet?
I'm sorry - I didn't realise it wasn't appropriate to post my annoyance about being bitten by a dog whilst cycling on a cycling forum? Are you sure its not you in the wrong place? Or is this just a dog forum now? It does kinda look like one.
Yeah shit owners give the good owners a bad name. Hope you recover soon.
Probably you were jumping a red light like all cyclists though.
First off I'm sorry you've been bitten and absolutely the owners of those dogs should have taken responsibility, their actual behaviour means they're not fit to keep them I'd agree.
Speaking as a dogger and regular commuter cyclist on shared paths, both activities expose me to a lot of dogs, I do think it's a minority of owners that are irresponsible though. They are the ones that stick in your mind of course, the normally behaved ones just aren't memorable.
You dog owners are hilarious, acting like this is some kind of isolated incident…that this vast nation of incredibly responsible dog owners and their well trained dogs are being let down by a tiny minority of idiots…..
It was this bit I was highlighting. STWers are probably almost all the responsible type, so do feel let down by the idiots!
But it's awful you've been bitten. And it is always the owners' fault - some people just genuinely seem to think they have zero responsibility or reason to actually make an effort with their dog
Definitely report it - next "fast" cyclist might be a child
IME its about 50 / 50 well trained and poorly trained dogs. One of the issues is that dog owners think behaviour is acceptable that non dog owners do not ie running up to folk or having poor recall etyc etc.
this is why again IMO / IME that dog owners on here think the problems are a tiny minority - its because they do not understands the viewpoint and wishes of non dog owners.
The only acceptable behaviour is that the dog ignores anyone not its owner
They just don’t understand that non dog owners don’t want the same thing (or we’d have a dog!) We’re not scared, we don’t want to ‘understand’ your dog. We just don’t want it anywhere near us unless its trotting by on a lead.

Yep times 100!
'Oh sorry, he's not good with bikes' Well ****ing keep it on a lead when you're on a shared use path you moron.
'Can you just stop moving while he finishes running around your legs barking?' No. I'm getting out of this situation as fast as possible and if your mutt chases me then you've lost your dog.
Sorry you got bitten OP, it's rubbish. Do what you can with the police - the owners and dogs need sorting.
I agree that the UK has a dog fetish. I actually like (some) dogs but where I live dogs are everywhere. On beaches where they are banned in the summer. In nature reserves and SSSIs causing endless disturbance to ground nesting birds and vulnerable winter wader populations, crapping on meadows that make them impossible to cut for hay, in rivers where their flea treatments are damaging and ponds dug wildlife that could do without wallowing canines.
Cycling to work is like a dog slalom made worse by extendable leads and grumpy owners or owners that have loud exaggerated conversations with their dogs which are designed to convey subliminal messages to you that really they would rather you not ride down the path and make them have to control Fido. Yes I know they are shared use paths but shared with walkers and kids not dogs that don’t need to be there…
Walking round the woods (especially with kids) you pass other walkers with a quiet hello and no drama, meet a dog walker and who knows what kind of kerfuffle will ensue. All this is before you even consider the aggressive nasty dogs that cause the kind of incident that kicked this thread off.
I know this post won’t be popular… but I wish that there were a lot fewer dogs about the place.
So because you've been bitten once you've leapt to a whole host of bollox generalisations and assumptions and managed to label most dogs and owners as savages / scum. That says more about you than anyone else.
Feels like OP is enjoying this a bit too much.
Get well soon, hope nothing serious. I had a dog come running out of the bushes at me and take a chunk out of my right leg about 30 years ago at Caeser's Camp. Still have the scar, and it ruined a pair of Gore tights. Owners just disappeared sharpish, didn't even check if I was OK. Idiots.
Love my dog, though.

So how often does he have to get bitten before he’s allowed to express an opinion? He’s the victim here not dog owners.

I'm really sorry you've been bitten, but as a non dog owner, my experience riding around dogs, often on country parks, bridleways and towpaths - is that the majority of dogs/owners are well trained or on a lead, and it's very rare that a dog makes any attempt to come near me.
this is why again IMO / IME that dog owners on here think the problems are a tiny minority – its because they do not understands the viewpoint and wishes of non dog owners.
I think you will find. That responsible dog dog owners are well aware of the problems. I can guarantee you i have had more run ins with out of control dogs with my dog on a lead than any random non dogger just minding their business.
It is a tiny minority just like its a tiny minority of drivers/cyclists/youth/religionists/right wingers/left wingers/brexiteers/remoaners that cause all the problem associated with any of those topics.
Everyone has said report the incident move on.
So how often does he have to get bitten before he’s allowed to express an opinion? He’s the victim here not dog owners.
I have been knocked over on a green man by a cyclist. So i assume i am perfectly entitled to call you a selfish ****?
But its not a tioy minority IME - its about 50/50. You just make my point for me. dog owners think behaviour is acceptable that non dog owners do not
But it is a tiny majority.
You just make my point for me. dog owners think behaviour is acceptable that non dog owners do not
I'm a non dog owner and made my point above. Obviously our individual experiences will vary based on location, but it was a very busy night for dog walkers in our local country park last night but I lead a group of 18 cyclists on a 13 mile loop with not a single problem..
I'm with the OP. Too many irresponsible people who have got dogs as fur babies that they cannot/won't control are making the outdoors a pain for anyone on a bike. I like dogs, don't own one but too many people excuse their behavior when we are really talking about dogs that are out of control. My neighbour has a huge fluffy teddy bear of a dog which she thinks is ok to blunder round our garden and I'm a miserable sod cos I object. My sister has a large, nervous Alsatian/husky cross that chases hares, horses, reacts aggressively when scared. According to my sis this is acceptable because it's highly strung! The attitude seems to be "I want so I can have and everybody else can just suck it up"
The attitude seems to be “I want so I can have and everybody else can just suck it up”
Which is nothing to do with dog ownership. Its prevalent everywhere at the moment.
but it was a very busy night for dog walkers in our local country park last night but I lead a group of 18 cyclists on a 13 mile loop with not a single problem..
Not one dog off a lead running free that you had to slow for? Not one extendable lead across the path that you had to slow for? Not one dog barking at the bikes?
I am certainly suprised because that is not my experience. Mine is that every ride I get multiple instances of these things
But its not a tioy minority IME – its about 50/50. You just make my point for me. dog owners think behaviour is acceptable that non dog owners do not
No i didn't. You are discussing the split of dogs that approach you. I am saying IME the number of dogs that actually approach you is small.
And lets both remember that experience is not the same as facts.
I really didn't want to get into an argument on this thread.
The OP is rightly pissed off he should rant away. I hope in time though he realises that tarring everyone based on shitty experiences is rubbish for the soul.
Sienna would like to apologies on behalf of all dogs (they had a meeting) and offer you a choice of either a complimentary Tomato or Strawberry plant from her stall to keep your Vitamin C levels up and help with the recover.

The OP is rightly pissed off he should rant away. I hope in time though he realises that tarring everyone based on shitty experiences is rubbish for the soul.
Exactly, you have my sympathy. But your rant is like the daily **** I get from drivers on my commute that think all cyclist are Charlie Alliston.
You were cycling too fast for what? Dafuq are the dogs like when they see cars?
Sorry you got bitten. I've been bitten before (twice now). Both times doing my paper round (it was years ago).
My new pup says sorry on behalf of the meanie dogs and offers his paw in friendship. (7 months old Cavoodle)
WRT the OP....
GF and I got chased by two massive Maremma Sheep dogs for 100m or so the other day..... Bearing their teeth. Was a bit scary. Did nothing for my Z2 training. Squirted my water bottle at them and fortunately they backed off.
No idea what we else we could do.... There were another two in the adjacent field trotting over, too. No owner around for miles.
Joshvegas I agree it's people we are complaining about, not dogs. Same as the idiots with noise cancelling headphones that you can sit behind shouting at the top of your voice. However too many dog owners on here seem to want to excuse antisocial behaviour because dogs are involved
No one's excused the behaviour.....
