I have around two hours a day that is largely dead time in the car and I fancy trying to improve my French which is, at best, crap. Although if you want to know how to ask the way to the library I'm your man.

I already speak Greek and English which I learned in my childhood. Are these audio based language courses actually any good, has anyone on here learned a language to any significant extent using this method?

French girlfriend? The best way is to speak/practice, reading both text and grammar will help you understand what's going on. As an adult you want to know why thing happen, not accepting that they just do... Listening to a cassette is better than nothing, but there are better ways. It also depends on the student too, you may adapt while others don't. Give it a go and see what happens, if you don't like it go for the French girlfriend /lover thingy. 😉
I tried Spanish by cassette and got thoroughly bored.
