Currently flooring the loft. All going well, and chipboard almost ready to be laid. However i've just found a puddle (after last nights weather i'm not that suprised!) on the chipboard under a rather old, draughty wooden framed single glazed fixed window.

Wood around it is soft, so probably rotten to some degree. Not looking to replace the window, just want to stop any more water coming in.

Do I just need to pump some window and door sealant around the edges, and hope for the best or is it a more complicated job? Also, worth going for branded stuff (Unibond Weather Protect) over £4 ebay window and door sealant?

New skylight then. If you don't want to spend money, then use wood hardener, and then pumped silicone mastic all round any gaps/joints. Use a mastic gun to apply it with, and only do it when it's dry.

Of course it could be just leaking because of a badly fitting skylight - which could be easily remedied, but I can't tell from here.

skylight, or dormer? If its a dormer, it might be a bit more involved, if its a skylight, id just chaff out the worst of the rot, fill it, paint it and then silicone (sikaflex)all around it and hope for the best. If that doesnt work it wont have cost much in time or money and at least you know you tried. Then replace with a new quaility one, still not a huge expense.
