Right, after chopping through the flex of my electric one yesterday and almost shitting myself to death (it had an RCD so i was being safe) i need a good petrol lawnmover. Reliability, ease of start and easy to move around are key criteria - any tips ?

I got a tesco one for £170 a couple of years ago and it's still going strong.

Somebody will be along soon to recommend an identical one for twice the price.

How much grass are you cutting?
Self propelled? mulching?

On the supplied info may I suggest this...

I picked up a Bosch battery powered mover a few weeks ago. Awesome bit of kit and the charge lasts an age now they've increased the battery capacity.

lerk - nice ! But possibly impractical.

Its a pretty big garden , several tight sloped sections, narrow parts etc so a sit on sadly is not practical (i was offered one FoC !)

Light weight, steel body, good engine all requirements.

Used a petrol Hayter and it was like cheating, easy to start and left stripes.

Try and get one with a plastic deck as grass will rot through metal ones but in a use it once a fortnight that won't make a big difference.

I'd be looking at something that is self propelled if you have a slope, other than that just get the biggest you can afford from a big brand so spares will be available.

I just bought a mountfield self propelled (it's a flat garden) this year. £220, easy to start, easy to use and makes cutting grass far less of a chore than it was with my crappy flymo.

Honda, i use them everyday never fail to start.

Get a 465 izy self drive cost about £500 but it'll be the only mower you'll ever need.

I've got a mountfield that's got the Honda engine, it's very good.

Ever consider a mulching mower..?

I love ours, a Husqvarna, with a Honda engine... have a fair bit of lawn so never have to worry about using and emptying a hopper.
